Somerville honors officer killed in crash
Hundreds of mourners lined the block outside the Doherty funeral home in Somerville yesterday to pay respects to fallen police officer Louis Remigio.
Law enforcement officers from across the region lined up their motorcycles on nearby streets as five MBTA buses unloaded hundreds of uniformed cops outside the funeral home. The brilliant late afternoon sun glinted off Remigio’s police motorcycle, which was parked on the lawn of the funeral home.
“Difficult and heartbreaking do little to describe the pain we, the Remigio family and friends, are continuing to experience after the tragic death of our father,” the Remigio family expressed in a written statement read by one of the late officer’s close friends, Somerville police Lt. James Polito.
Remigio’s daughters, Alexandra and Danielle, both in their 20s, lost their mother to a sudden illness last year.
Friends and family members remembered “Louie” Remigio as a role model who worked “tirelessly,” but always made time for his family and was a fixture on the sidelines of his daughters’ soccer games.
The 55-year-old Somerville cop was killed by a wrong-way driver Sunday morning while riding his motorcycle through New Hampshire.
“He had a passion to help people,” Somerville police Chief David Fallon said. “He had a passion to be kind, and I think that came through in his policing.”
Funeral services will be held this morning.
