Gravely delivers with LT

Four scores help Tigers stay perfect

WAKEFIELD — A win on the football field is sweet enough, and more so on your birthday.

Just ask Lynn Tech coach James Runner, who celebrated his special day with a 47-26 win over Commonwealth Athletic Conference crossover opponent Northeast yesterday at Breakheart Stadium.

“We put a lot of work into our offensive line this week,” said Runner. “We kept our feet in the mud.”

The Lynn Tech offense scored on all but two possessions — including going 4-for-4 in the first half.

Steffan Gravely accounted for most of the Tigers’ points with three rushing touchdowns. He carried the ball 10 times and gained 154 yards. In the first half alone, Gravely had 97 rushing yards.

He put Lynn Tech (6-0) on the board, then his second offensive score before intermission put the Tigers up 27-8 with about a minute to go before halftime.

“It was great,” he said. “We executed and did what we wanted to do.”

Gravely wasn’t done for the first half, because he wasn’t just limited to big plays on offense. He finished with a double-digit total for tackles and returned an interception for another score that allowed the Tigers to make it 34-8 at the half, completing a 27-0 run in the second quarter.

“(Gravely) is a great defensive player (too),” Runner said. “Defensively he plays very well as a linebacker. He stepped up very well today and made plays when needed.”

After the break, the Tigers continued to pile up points with Gravely capping his team’s outburst by running 52 yards for a 47-12 lead.

David Barrios connected with Elvin Gonzalez, who eluded a tackle and took the reception 73 yards for the Tigers’ lone completion and a 19-8 lead in the second quarter.

The other two scores for Lynn Tech came on the legs of Keoni Gaskin, who finished with eight carries for 108 yards. His first gave the Tigers a 13-8 lead early in the second and his second made it 40-14 late in the third quarter.

For Northeast (2-4), Connor Joseph came up with three of the four rushing scores as he accumulated 62 yards on 14 carries. Zach Sanderson had 17 carries for 130 yards to go with his two-point conversion run. Dillon Pineau scored from 8 yards out early in the third for Northeast.

“My hats off to Donnie (Heres),” Runner said about the Northeast coach. “We were 1-4 against his team and it is the first time we have won on (their) football field. We are good friends and I respect his football program. They are always tough.”
