Cutler out, Moore stays in for Miami

-

Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler has multiple cracked ribs, making it unlikely he’ll play Thursday night at Baltimore, coach Adam Gase said yesterday. Matt Moore is expected to start in Cutler’s place after coming off the bench Sunday to lead a 31-28 comeback victory against the New York Jets.

Gase declined to say whether Cutler remains the No. 1 quarterback when he returns. A hit by Jets linebacker Jordan Jenkins sidelined Cutler in the third quarter. Moore came on and threw two touchdown passes to help Miami erase a 14-point deficit in the final 12 minutes. Moore went 13-for-21 for 188 yards and one interception.

The Dolphins are off to their best start since 2003, but the offense ranks last in the NFL in yards per game and per play. Cutler ranks 28th in passer rating . . . .

Denver coach Vance Joseph said benching quarterback Trevor Siemian isn’t the solution to the Broncos’ myriad problems on offense.

Joseph said the blame for Denver’s monthlong funk falls on coaches, linemen, receivers, tight ends, running backs and even poor special teams decisions.

The Broncos lost 21-0 Sunday to the Chargers, snapping their 394-game scoring streak that dated to Nov. 30, 1992 . . . .

Ben McAdoo is sticking with Eli Manning as the New York Giants’ quarterback in what has become a frustrating, lost season.

The Giants coach made it clear yesterday that the 1-6 record is not grounds for handing the quarterback job to third-round draft pick Davis Webb.

The offense has scored 112 points, the fifth fewest in the league. In a 24-7 loss to Seattle on Sunday, the offense was limited to 177 yards, the team’s lowest output since 2013.

Browns’ Thomas out

Cleveland Browns Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas will miss the remainder of the season with a torn left triceps, a devastating blow to an already floundering franchise sitting at 0-7 on the season.

Thomas was hurt during the third quarter of Sunday’s overtime loss to Tennessee, and an MRI taken yesterday confirmed the injury. The 10-time Pro Bowler had been incredibly durable, playing 10,363 consecutive snaps before the freak injury . . . .

Los Angeles Chargers veteran left guard Matt Slauson will miss the rest of the season with a biceps injury . . . .

Colts rookie starting safety Malik Hooker will miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee Sunday against Jacksonville . . . .

The Buffalo Bills claimed cornerback Tony McRae off waivers to shore up an injury depleted secondary.

Elliott can play on

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott will play at least one more game before another ruling from a federal judge on his six-game suspension over domestic violence allegations. U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla yesterday turned down the NFL’s request for an expedited hearing on a preliminary injunction. She set one for Oct. 30 . . . .

Oakland running back Marshawn Lynch presented his appeal to the NFL to overturn his one-game suspension for bumping an official. Lynch was suspended for one game without pay for coming off the sideline during a scuffle in the second quarter and then shoving a game official during Oakland’s 31-30 victory over Kansas City last Thursday night . . . .

The NFL suspended Vikings safety Andrew Sendejo for one game for violating player safety rules after a hit to the head of Ravens receiver Mike Wallace. Sendejo was penalized for unnecessary roughness . . . .

The Detroit Lions activated defensive tackle Khyri Thornton, who was suspended for the first six games of the season for violating the NFL’s substanceabuse policy . . . .

Houston Texans veteran left tackle Duane Brown ended his holdout after missing the team’s first six games. The three-time Pro Bowler, who has two years remaining on his contract, sought a new deal which he did not receive.
