GOP U.S. Senate hopeful calls out Liz for partisanship

- — HERALD STAFF

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Beth Lindstrom joined Boston Herald Radio’s “Morning Meeting” show yesterday to talk about the newly released GOP tax reform plan and Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Q: So talk to me about the tax plan. This has been something that you’ve really been vocal about this week.

A: I think this an opportunity for our Sen. Elizabeth Warren and our Sen. Ed Markey to effect some change for Massachusetts. One of the things that I think is important is to lower the corporate tax rate. ... But one of the things that is really important, I think, and can be really effected by either senator is to get rid of the medical device tax. That has been on the books and that’s a big part of Massachusetts that they have the opportunity now to go in and try to negotiate that to get that off the books.

Q: Are you concerned at all, because everybody’s so immediately anti-Trump and anti-Republican, that these potentially good proposals in this plan will get sort of shouted down?

A: And that is part of the problem, but I will say that I have not reviewed the whole proposal at this point. But I’m sure that there are some good things just like there are in most debates. If you can work across the aisle, if you can work with people to get the best out of each other’s views, then I think you can make progress. The problem is that we have Sen. Elizabeth Warren who doesn’t even want to have the conversation. She puts up the stop sign and says, “I’m going to be so hyperpartisan that I’m just going to be against anything Donald Trump does,” and I don’t think we in Massachusetts nor as a country deserve that type of leadership.

Q: So talk to me about one of the aspects of this, it didn’t end up getting in, but what do you think of the Obamacare individual mandate? They wanted to get rid of that. Where are you on that idea?

A: I don’t have an opinion about Obamacare today, but I do think that we here in Massachusetts have had such a great health care system that we should look to see what is right for the people of Massachusetts and that’s what the senator should go to Washington and work with the president to make sure that that’s who they’re representing. They have had almost 99 percent coverage in health care. ... What are the things working for us here? And I think that’s the message that should be carried to Washington.
