It’s official: Revs name Friedel

Former U.S. national team goalkeeper Brad Friedel officially was named the new head coach of the Revolution.

The 46-year-old Friedel most recently served as head coach of the U.S. under-19 national team. As reported earlier in the week, the appointmen­t was announced yesterday.

Friedel made 82 appearance­s for the United States over 13 years and was on the national team’s roster for three World Cups, including the American team that advanced to the quarterfin­als in 2002.

His club career was highlighte­d by 17 Premier League seasons, including stints with the Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

He has been with the U.S. under-19 team since January, also serving as an assistant on the under-20 team to head coach Tab Ramos . . . .

Retired American star Landon Donovan will not run for president of the U.S. Soccer Federation. Donovan’s agent, Richard Motzkin, confirmed the decision, first reported by Sports Illustrate­d. USSF president Sunil Gulati has not announced whether he will seek a fourth four-year term. In the wake of the Americans’ failure to qualify for next year’s World Cup, former national team players Paul Caligiuri, Eric Wynalda and Kyle Martino are among the candidates for the election in February. Boston lawyer Steve Gans and Paul LaPointe, Northeast Conference manager of the United Premier Soccer League, also are running . . . .

Alex Morgan posted her 79th internatio­nal goal in the first half, but Breakers forward Adriana Leon scored in the 57th minute to give host Canada a 1-1 draw with the United States in a soccer friendly in front of a sellout crowd at BC Place in Vancouver, British Colombia.

KC’s Yost hurt in fall

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost broke his pelvis and several ribs during a fall on his property in Georgia. The 62-year-old manager was working on a deer stand that gave way . . . .

Rob Thomson, a bench coach on the Joe Girardi’s staff for the past decade, is the first candidate to be interviewe­d to replace the New York Yankees manager. A 54-year-old Canadian who has been with the Yankees for 28 seasons, Thomson met for several hours with general manager Brian Cashman, assistant general managers Jean Afterman and Mike Fishman, vice president of baseball operations Tim Naehring . . . .

Former major league skipper Chip Hale will be the bench coach for new Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez, while Derek Lilliquist will be the team’s pitching coach. Also joining the team are first base coach Tim Bogar and assistant hitting coach Joe Dillon . . ..

Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill says Don Mattingly will be back as manager next season . . . .

The Cubs hired Jim Hickey as their pitching coach and moved Brandon Hyde to bench coach.

Patton Kizzire carried some momentum from last week in Las Vegas by running off six straight birdies and opening with a 9-under-par 62 that gave him a 2-shot lead in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen, Mexico . . . .
