Williams wins 400th with UNC

Luke Maye scored 20 points and No. 9 North Carolina held on to give coach Roy Williams his 400th victory at the school, a 9381 win against Bucknell last night in Chapel Hill, N.C., in the on-campus round of the PK80.

Theo Pinson added a careerhigh 19 points for the Tar Heels (2-0), who shot 47 percent and welcomed back Final Four Most Outstandin­g Player Joel Berry from a hand injury on the same day graduate transfer Cameron Johnson was lost for 4-6 weeks following knee surgery.

Nana Foulland and Zack Thomas scored 21 points apiece for Bucknell (0-3). The Patriot League favorites shot 11-of-28 from 3-point range to offset a serious disadvanta­ge inside.

Sterling Manley had 16 points and 13 rebounds and Garrison Brooks and Kenny Williams had 10 points apiece for North Carolina, which held a 47-28 rebounding advantage.

Williams improved to 400-115 since returning to his alma mater from Kansas in 2003, and won his 200th game at the Dean E. Smith Center.

Minnesota 107, Niagara 81 — In Minneapoli­s, Amir Coffey, Reggie Lynch and Jordan Murphy all scored 18 points, and Lynch and Murphy added 12 and 11 rebounds, respective­ly, as the No. 14 Golden Gophers (3-0) pulled away from the Purple Eagles (1-1).

Seton Hall 84, Indiana 68 — In Newark, N.J., Desi Rodriguez scored 23 points, keying a balanced scoring attack and leading the No. 22 Pirates (3-0) to the victory against the Hoosiers (1-2) in the Gavitt Tip Off Games last night in Newark, N.J.

W. Virginia 98, American 64 — In Morgantown, W. Va., Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles scored 20 points each, and the No. 24 Mountainee­rs (1-1) battled back from a slow start to blow out the overmatche­d Eagles (0-2).

In New England hoops: UMass-Lowell 76, Marist 73 — Matt Harris’ 23 points led the scoring, and Jahad Thomas had 21 points to go with 17 rebounds and eight assists, as the River Hawks (2-1) scored the win against the visiting Red Foxes (02).

Bentley 89, Stonehill 86 — In Waltham, Ryan Richmond scored 29 points, Zach Gilpin contribute­d 23 points and Jordan Mello-Klein had 17 and 10 rebounds as the Falcons (3-0, 1-0 NE-10) edged the Skyhawks (0-3, 0-1).

Merrimack 71, Assumption 65 — In Worcester, Ryan Boulter led with 20 points, Juvaris Harris added 18 and nine rebounds, and the Warriors (3-0, 1-0 NE10) beat the Greyhounds (0-3, 0-1).

Le Moyne 55, AIC 41 — In Syracuse, the Dolphins (3-0, 1-0 NE-10) were led by nine points apiece from Tom Brown and Russell Sangster in beating the Yellow Jackets (2-1, 0-1).

Women’s basketball

UMass-Lowell 77, Columbia 70 — Brianna Rudolph scored 18 points and Paula Lopez had 15 to lead the River Hawks (1-2) to the win against the visiting Lions (1-2).

Harvard 75, Siena 67 — Katie Benzan put up 28 points and Taylor Rooks grabbed 15 points as the Crimson (1-2) beat the Saints (1-2) at Lavietes Pavilion.

UNH 75, BU 57 — In Durham, N.H., Carlie Pogue’s 18 points paced the Wildcats (1-1) in the win against the Terriers (1-1).
