a 16-10 victory over BYU yesterday in Provo, Utah — earning a fourth win for the first time as an FBS school.

UMass (4-7) started playing FBS football in 2012 and never won more than three games nor won a road game against a team outside of the Mid-American Conference.

The loss gives BYU nine losses for the third time in school history, matching 1949 and 1955.

Rhett Almond got BYU on the board with a 40-yard field goal with 1:35 left in the third quarter and Joe Critchlow hit Matt Bushman with a 6-yard TD pass in the final minute.

Albany 15, New Hampshire 0 — Will Brunson connected on a 54-yard touchdown pass with Austin Ellis for the game’s only touchdown, and the Great Danes (4-7, 2-6 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) upset the FCS-ranked Wildcats (7-6, 5-3) in Albany, N.Y.

Stony Brook 20, Maine 19 — In Orono, Maine, Harrison Jackson snagged Joe Carbone’s Hail Mary pass on the final play of the game to give the Seawolves (9-2, 7-1 CAA) a victory over the Black Bears (4-6, 3-5) and giving a big boost to the Stony Brook’s bid for an FCS playoff berth.

Towson 29, Rhode Island 10 — Ryan Stover threw four touchdown passes to rally the Tigers (5-6, 3-5) to a CAA win over the Rams (3-8, 2-6) in Towson, Md.

Bryant 38, Duquesne 29 — Price Wilson threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns, including a go-ahead score to Matt Sewall in the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs (6-5, 4-2 Northeast Conference) beat the Dukes (7-4, 4-2) in Smithfield, R.I.

Columbia 24, Brown 6 — Josh Wainwright had a career-high 13 catches for 127 yards and a TD, setting a single-season school record for receiving yards as the Lions (8-2, 5-2) finished one of the most successful seasons in school history with an Ivy League win over the Bears (2-8, 0-7) in New York.

Dartmouth 54, Princeton 44 — Jared Gerbino ran for a career-high 202 yards and four touchdowns, including the clinching score with no time left, as the Big Green (8-2, 5-2) beat the Tigers (55, 2-5) in Hanover, N.H.

Assumption 40, California (Pa.) 31 — Shawn Springs Jr. picked off two passes and returned the second 39 yards for a touchdown with 1:02 to go as the Greyhounds (10-1) beat the Vulcans (9-2) in the NCAA Division 2 first-round game in Worcester.

Assumption will host Findlay in the second round on Saturday.

Andrew Benson of East Bridgewate­r, Bryce Jacob and Levi Fancher had intercepti­ons for the Greyhounds. Brendan Tobey of Lynn had a touchdown pass and Doug Santos of Peabody rushed for 70 yards and scored two TDs.

Husson 23, Springfiel­d 21 — Hunter Belzo rushed for 113 yards with a score and Jordan Wilcox added 111 yards and two scores but it wasn’t enough as the No. 19 Pride (10-1) lost in the NCAA Div. 3 first-round playoff to the Eagles (10-1) in Springfiel­d.

Framingham State 48, Curry 14 — Adam Wojenski was 19-of-28 passing for 246 yards and five touchdowns and was selected the MVP as the Rams (10-1) captured their second straight New England Bowl over the Colonels (8-3) in Framingham.

Men’s hockey

BU 7, Maine 0 — Jake Oettinger made 30 saves to help the No. 18 Terriers (5-7-1, 3-4-1 Hockey East) breeze past the Black Bears (4-5-0, 3-2-0) in Portland, Maine.

BC 4, NU 1 — Joseph Woll made 27 saves to lead the Eagles (8-5-1, 8-1-0) to a victory over the No. 12 Huskies (7-4-1, 5-2-0) at Matthews Arena.

UMass-Lowell 1, UConn 0 — Christoffe­r Hernberg turned away 33 shots and Connor Wilson scored in the second period as the River Hawks (8-6-0, 5-5-0) edged the Huskies (3-10-2, 2-6-1) in Hartford, Conn.

Providence 6, Merrimack 6 — Erik Foley had two goals and two assists to help the Friars (7-4-1, 4-3-1) tie with the Warriors (2-7-3, 1-4-1) in Providence.

Minnesota 4, Harvard 2— Casey Mittelstad­t had a goal plus an assist while Eric Schierhorn had 26 saves for the No. 7 Golden Gophers (8-4-1) in a win over the No.13 Crimson (24-0) in Minneapoli­s.

Women’s hockey

BU 3, Vermont 1 — Rebecca Leslie had a goal with two assists as the Terriers (4-6-2, 3-5-2) beat the Catamounts (5-9-1, 3-6-1) in Burlington, Vt.

NU 3, Maine 0 — Aerin Frankel had 39 saves for the Huskies (7-6-2, 5-3-1 WHEA) to blank the Black Bears (8-6-1, 3-3-1) at Matthews Arena.

BC 3, UConn 3 — Daryl Watts scored twice but the No. 2 Eagles (10-1-2, 5-0-2 WHEA) finished tied with the Huskies (4-5-4, 0-4-3) in Storrs, Conn.

Men’s soccer

Tufts 0, Johns Hopkins 0 — Travis Van Brewer scored the game-winning penalty kick as the defending national champion Jumbos (15-1-4) advanced in the NCAA Division 3 tournament thanks to a 4-1 margin in PKs following a scoreless tie against the Blue Jays (16-1-4) in Medford.

Tufts will play Brandeis today (1 p.m.) in the sectional final.

Brandeis 1, Drew 0 — For the third time this postseason, senior Mike Lynch of Weymouth scored the winning goal to lift the Judges (16-4-0) past the Rangers (21-1-1) and into the national quarterfin­als today.

Women’s soccer

Messiah 5, MIT 0 — A historic season came to a close for the No. 13 Engineers (20-2-1) with this NCAA Division 3 third-round setback to the Falcons (17-2-3) in Ewing, N.J.

Cross country

University of New Hampshire star Elinor Purrier finished 18th in the NCAA cross country championsh­ips with a time of 19:53.3 to earn AllAmerica honors. Heather MacLean of Peabody became the first UMass woman to earn All-America honors in cross country as she finished 26th in 20:03.5.

Men’s basketball

Texas Tech 75, Boston College 64 — Keenan Evans scored 18 of his 29 points in the second half to lead the Red Raiders (3-0) over the Eagles (3-1) in the Hall of Fame Tip-off Tournament in Uncasville, Conn.

Zach Smith had 11 points and nine rebounds for Texas Tech.

Ky Bowman led BC with 15 points, while Nik Popovic had 12 and Jordan Chatman 11. Jerome Robinson and Deontae Hawkins had 10 apiece.

Manhattan 73, Harvard 69 — Calvin Crawford had 19 points and nine rebounds, Rich Williams made a late go-ahead 3-pointer, and the Jaspers (2-0) held off the Crimson (2-2) in Riverdale, N.Y. Williams finished with 18 points.

Seth Towns led Harvard with 17 points.

Wake Forest 72, Quinnipiac 55 — Bryant Crawford scored 17 points, Chaundee Brown had 16 and the Demon Deacons (1-3) opened a 22-point lead by halftime and beat the Bobcats (13) in the Paradise Jam in Lynchburg, Va.
