Fenway fun for Eagles
Will Bowen made sure BC High claimed a title at one of Massachusetts’ iconic sports venues.
Led by Bowen’s 160 total yards and three touchdowns, BC High defeated Catholic Memorial, 32-16, to secure first place in the Catholic Conference last night at Fenway Park.
The game was a rematch of a Division 1 South sectional semifinal where the Knights won on a last-second Hail Mary, knocking the Eagles (10-1) out of the postseason.
Bowen noted how capturing the league title on a field as storied as Fenway was a nice reprieve.
“Once we lost, we reset our goals to get to 10-1 and win the conference,” said Bowen. “This was the last football game for the rest of our lives so it’s great to be able to do this at such a special venue.”
The Eagles’ defensive front seven gave Knights quarterback Nick Goffredo fits all evening. Tommy Joyce (two sacks, six tackles), Francis Dooley (three sacks) and Bowen (six tackles) led a unit that combined for six sacks, a fumble recovery, and an interception.
“We knew they were a passing team so we just pinned our ears back and went after them,” said Joyce.
With BC High ahead 13-2 to begin the third quarter, Danny Abraham (17 carries, 146 yards) instantly increased the lead, taking an inside handoff and running 52 yards untouched for a touchdown.
The Knights (6-5) answered on their next drive as Goffredo rolled right and hit Garrett McCarthy for a 3-yard score that made it a 19-8 game.
Bowen, however, put the game out of reach with TD passes on consecutive drives to freshman Carter Rice — one from 19 yards out, the next one from 12 yards away — to increase the lead to 32-8.
“This was about the seniors,” said BC High coach Jon Bartlett. “These kids will have this memory forever.”
The Eagles jumped in front in the second quarter as a strip sack by Joyce set up a 32-yard touchdown run by Abraham.
Another Joyce sack forced a Knights punt before the half. Bowen ran for 62 yards off the zone read to set up his own 3-yard score and give the Eagles a 13-2 edge at the break.
