Let’s go jammin’ on Black Friday

- HILL HAPPENINGS Moira McCarthy

Here’s some of the hippest happenings on the slopes:

Nov. 24: Black Friday Rail Jam, Gunstock, N.H. — Who needs the challenge of fighting at the door of a big box store when instead you can hit great box elements in a good rail jam? This Black Friday rail jam asks that you bring a non-perishable food item (or a few) for families in need. Entry is $10, with registration at 2 p.m. and action at 3. And in case you still crave some deals, Mountainside Outfitters will be on hand with some black Friday deals. www.gunstock.com

Nov. 25: Cease and Desist, Loon Mountain, N.H. — Now in it’s 12th year, this popular under-the-lights rail jam features a live DJ, “cash for tricks” format, a chance to try out all of Loon’s new features for this season and a $1,000 cash purse. $15 fee. Registration at 3:30 p.m. www.loonmnt.com

Nov. 25-26: Cans or Cash, Getting Jibby at the Kitty, Wildcat Mountain, N.H. — The name is cool and the event is just as cool. For the price of three cans of food for the needy or $3, you are in either day for a full day of hiking to ride the rail garden. www.skiwildcat.com Nov. 25: Cold Turkey Plunge, Waterville Valley, N.H. — Waiting for spring to do an on-mountain plunge is for the week. Dive right in first thing this season with this charitable event. Plungers are asked to raise or donate at least $50 for the “right” to plunge into Corcoran’s Pond at the base at 1 p.m. Every plunger gets a commemorate (long sleeved) shirt and bracelet, as well as a delicious cold turkey sandwich. There are other prizes as well. Proceeds support local athletic programs for athletes with disabilities. www.waterville.com Dec. 2-3: Day In the Life of a Ski Instructor, Okemo Vt — Spend all day learning just what a day in the life of a ski instructor is like. The day includes a lift ticket, lessons, lunch and all kinds of instruction. One day per guest, pre-registration required.
