Trump vs. the NFL, again

-

Many families finish off their Thanksgiving Day celebrations by catching a little football with family and friends who have lingered after dinner — and maybe throwing in another slice of pie, just because.

Once again proving that the Family Trump isn’t like the rest of us, the president began his Black Friday with yet another Twitter rant against the National Football League.

It’s unclear whether the president had indeed tuned in to the New York Giants’ Thanksgiving game against Washington or was merely responding to a post-game tweet from his own social media director, Dan Scavino Jr., who complained about Giants defensive end Olivier Vernon kneeling during the national anthem.

Trump has been at Mar-a-Lago, where golf is his preferred way to pass the time.

But by Friday morning the president was once again all in a lather over a controversy that was on the verge of dying out until he opted to fan the flames, as he did once again yesterday.

“Can you believe that the disrespect for our Country, our Flag, our Anthem continues without penalty to the players. The Commissioner has lost control of the hemorrhaging league. Players are the boss!”

Trump has repeatedly called on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to punish players for exercising their free speech rights by kneeling during the national anthem.

But what began as a protest last season against police brutality has rapidly escalated this season after Trump referred to one kneeling player as a “son of a bitch.”

Vernon, whose father is a retired Miami police officer, has been kneeling ever since.

Trump seems to be under the impression that he is appealing to his “base” — albeit an evershrinking one. What he is succeeding in doing is convincing most folks he’s just an angry old white guy obsessed with black football players making a very public statement.
