Beltran takes swing at Yankees top job

Carlos Beltran interviewe­d with team officials to become manager of the New York Yankees yesterday at Yankee Stadium, four weeks after the final game of his 20-year major league career.

The 40-year-old Beltran was a nine-time All-Star and played for the Yankees from 2014-16. While he does not have any managerial experience, he mentored young teammates during his final seasons as a player, when he often was a designated hitter.

Beltran won his first World Series title with Houston this season, and Astros manager A.J. Hinch credited Beltran’s clubhouse presence with steadying the team during its seven-game win over the Dodgers . . . .

Outfielder Jake Smolinski agreed to a $775,000, oneyear contract with the Oakland Athletics. He missed almost the entire season following right shoulder surgery before returning to play in 16 games.

Nassar guilty again

Larry Nassar, the disgraced former doctor for U.S. Gymnastics, pleaded guilty in a third criminal case in Charlotte, Mich., acknowledg­ing that he molested girls who sought treatment for injuries.

The 54-year-old faces decades in prison for all three cases. Meanwhile, more than 100 women and girls are suing him.

OSU picks coach

Oregon State will reportedly hire Washington cooffensiv­e coordinato­r Jonathan Smith to be its new head football coach.

Smith is a former Beavers quarterbac­k who has been working as QB coach for coach Chris Petersen since 2012, starting at Boise State and following him to Washington in 2014 . . . .

No. 7 Miami has taken another big injury hit, losing wide receiver Ahmmon Richards for the remainder of the season after he injured his left knee in practice . . . .

Louisville quarterbac­k Lamar Jackson is once again the Atlantic Coast Conference’s player of the year, while North Carolina State defensive end Bradley Chubb is the league’s defensive player of the year . . . .

East Carolina men’s basketball coach Jeff Lebo has resigned amid a 2-4 start.

MLS Cup bound

Jozy Altidore scored in the 60th minute and host Toronto FC advanced to the MLS Cup final for the second straight year with a 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final . . . .

Nashville, Tenn. and Sacramento, Calif. are the two front-runners among the four finalists for a pair of MLS expansion teams. Cincinnati and Detroit are the other finalists.

They will present their case to the league on Dec. 6, and each winner will pay the league a $150 million expansion fee . . . .

The Colorado Rapids hired Anthony Hudson as their new coach. The 34-year-old just completed three seasons coaching New Zealand’s national team, which lost to Peru in a World Cup playoff . . . .

In English Premier League play, Raheem Sterling scored a last-gasp winner to lift Manchester City over Southampto­n, 2-1, to re-establish its eight-point lead over second-place Manchester United thanks to a 12th straight league win.

In other action, Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score twice, upping his EPLleading total to 12, in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Stoke, jumping to fifth place.
