BU not half bad in loss to No. 10 Miami

Freshman Lonnie Walker IV scored a season-high 26 points and unbeaten Miami, the No. 10 team in The Associated Press’ Top 25 men’s basketball poll, surged in the second half to beat Boston University, 69-54, last night in Coral Gables, Fla. The Terriers (3-4), who haven’t beaten a ranked team since 1959, played the hosts to a 30-30 tie in the first half. Max Mahoney led BU with 12 points off the bench.

Dejan Vasiljevic added 15 points for the Hurricanes (80).

Michigan St. 62, Rutgers 52 — In Piscataway, N.J., Miles Bridges scored 21 points to help the No. 3 Spartans (8-1, 2-0 Big Ten) overcome their worst offensive effort of the season to turn back the Scarlet Knights (6-3, 0-2).

Villanova 88, Gonzaga 72 — In New York, Mikal Bridges had his coming out performanc­e, scoring 28 points with five 3-poiinters and producing an intimidati­ng dunk-and-block sequence to lead the No. 4 Wildcats (9-0) by the No. 12 Zags (7-2) in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Ball St. 80, Notre Dame 77 — In South Bend, Ind., Tayler Persons hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 1.7 seconds remaining and the Cardinals (5-4), who were led by Persons’ 24 points, shocked the No. 9 Irish (7-2) for their first win against a ranked opponent in more than 16 years.

W. Virginia 68, Virginia 61 — In Morgantown, W. Va., Jevon Carter had 23 points and 10 rebounds, Lamont West scored 22 points and the No. 18 Mountainee­rs (81) beat the No. 15 Cavaliers (8-1).

Wagner 90, UMass-Lowell 72 — Elijah Davis and Blake Francis each had 20 points, JoJo Cooper had 10 points and 13 assists, and the Seahawks (6-1) beat the River Hawks (5-4), whose Jahad Thomas led with 19 points while Josh Gantz and Obadiah Noel had 13 apiece in New York.

Syracuse 72, UConn 63 — Oshae Brissett had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Tyus Battle scored 22 points to lead the Orange (7-1) past the Huskies (6-3) in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Niagara 78, UNH 70 — In Durham, N.H., Kahlil Dukes hit eight 3’s and finished with 31 points, Matt Scott scored 27 and grabbed eight rebounds, and the Purple Eagles (4-5) went on a late 9-0 run to take the lead and overcome Tanner Leissner’s 24 points that kept the Wildcats (2-7) in the game.

Marquette 91, Vermont 81 — In Milwaukee, Markus Howard had six 3-pointers and 34 points to power the Golden Eagles (6-3) past the Catamounts (6-3), whose freshman Stef Smith came off the bench to shoot 6-of-6 from 3-point range and score a career-high 20 points.

Sacred Heart 79, Dartmouth 73 — In Fairfield, Conn., Sean Hoehn hit four 3-pointers and scored 19 points, Zach Radz added 17 points and the Pioneers (4-5) found their way past the Big Green (2-4).

Merrimack 60, Franklin Pierce 59 — In Rindge, N.H., Juvaris Hayes’ 15 points included a layup off a steal with 24 seconds that gave the Warriors (7-3, 4-1 NE-10) the win against the Ravens (3-5, 1-5).

Stonehill 76, Assumption 65 — In Worcester, the Skyhawks (3-5, 2-3 Northeast-10) beat the Greyhounds (1-7, 0-5) behind 32 points, including 8-of-12 shooting on 3-pointers, from Brandon Twitty.

Williams 70, Westfield St. 63 — Bobby Casey scored 21 points off the bench and the Ephs (6-1), the No. 6 team in Division 3, held off the host Owls (5-4), whose Ty Sands had 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Amherst 78, Anna Maria 41 — The No. 21 Mammoths (5-0) eased past the visiting Amcats (2-5), with Eric Sellew’s 15 points, 12 from Fru Che and Johnny McCarthy’s 11 leading a balanced attack.

UMass-Boston 86, Pine Manor 71 — Michael Boyd led the way with 22 points, Charles Mitchell added 16 and Dasan Cinelli had 16 as the Beacons (3-3) lit up the Gators (3-4) at the Clark Athletic Center.

Plymouth St. 58, Framingham St. 51 — Mike Osgood and Jaylen Leroy scored 15 points apiece to pace the Panthers (3-3) in the win against the host Rams (2-6), whose Manny Payton had 20 points.

Men’s hockey

UConn 8, UMass 2 — Jeff Wight and Benjamin Freeman potted a pair of goals apiece to pace the Huskies (7-11-2, 5-7-1 Hockey East), who wore out three goaltender­s on the way to a rout of the Minutemen (8-7-0, 3-4-0) in Hartford.

Salem St. 4, Conn. College 1 — In New London, Conn., Michael Casale’s goal and two assists led the Vikings (5-5-0) in the win against the Camels (2-3-0).

Assumption 5, Post 2 — In Waterbury, Conn., the Greyhounds (6-5-1) raced past the winless Eagles (0-9-0), with Matt Cowles assisting on three goals.
