Towns, Harvard top Fordham

Seth Towns made a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to cap an 8-0 run, and the Harvard men’s basketball team edged Fordham, 47-45, last night in New York.

Joseph Chartouny hit a 3 to give Fordham a 45-39 lead with 2:35 to play. Harvard’s Bryce Aiken made three free throws and Danilo Djuricic made a layup before Towns scored the game-winner. Fordham’s Will Tavares missed a potential tying jumper with two seconds left.

Aiken scored 15 points and Chris Lewis had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Harvard (4-6). Towns finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Tavares had 12 points and Prokop Slanina added 11 to lead Fordham (3-5).

In other New England games:

Providence 77, Brown 72 — Rodney Bullock scored five of his 21 points in overtime and the host Friars (72) rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to beat the Bears (4-5). Bullock also grabbed nine rebounds.

Southern N.H. 89, Bentley 80 — Chris Walters (34 points, 13 rebounds) and Daquaise Andrews (27 points, nine rebounds) led the way as the Penmen (9-0, 6-0 Northeast-10), ranked No.18 in Division 2, grounded the Falcons (6-2, 4-1) in Waltham.

Norwich 65, Johnson State 60 — Jesse Davis scored 15 points off the bench to help the Cadets (15) hold off the Badgers (2-5) in Northfield, Vt.

In AP Top 25 games: Loyola-Chicago 65, Florida 59 — Aundre Jackson scored 23 points, Cameron Krutwig added 14 and the Ramblers (9-1) scored an upset in Gainesvill­e, Fla., handing the No.5 Gators (5-3) their third consecutiv­e loss.

N. Carolina 104, W. Carolina 61 — Luke Maye had 12 points and 12 rebounds and the No. 11 Tar Heels (9-1) hit a season-high 16 3-pointers to crush the Catamounts (37) in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Xavier 96, Kent State 70 — Trevon Bluiett scored 26 points — the seventh time he’s had 20 this season — and the No. 13 Musketeers (8-1) took control with an 18-0 run in a blowout of the Golden Flashes (5-4) in Cincinnati.

Women’s hoops

Harvard 79, Northeaste­rn 69 — Katie Benzan scored 27 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists to lead the Crimson (5-4), who also got 12 points from Kirby Porter, by the Huskies (3-5) at Matthews Arena.

Jess Genco and Shannon Todd had 15 points apiece for NU, and Zoe Zwerling added 12 in 16 minutes off the bench.

Boston College 70, Holy Cross 61 — Georgia Pineau scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, Taylor Ortlepp (14 points, seven assists) made 8-of-8 free throws and the Eagles (4-5) were able to hold off the Crusaders (3-5) in Worcester.

Southern N.H. 73, Bentley 68 — Kylie Lorenzen had 27 points and 11 rebounds as the Penmen (6-3, 5-1 Northeast-10) wrote off the Falcons (8-1, 4-1), who had climbed to No. 3 in Div. 2.

Tufts 63, WPI 50 — Melissa Baptista scored 17 points, Erica DeCandido added 15 points and nine rebounds and the Jumbos (7-0), ranked No.1 in Div.3, beat the Engineers (5-2) in Worcester.

Men’s hockey

UNH 6, Rensselaer 3 — Jason Salvaggio (two goals, assist) and Mike McNicholas (goal, two assists) had three-point nights to help the No. 13 Wildcats (8-5-1) beat the Engineers (3-10-3) in Troy, N.Y.

Women’s hockey

Harvard 1, Dartmouth 0 — Val Turgeon scored at 13:37 of the third period, Beth Larcom made 28 saves and the Crimson (7-4-1, 5-2-1 ECAC) edged the Big Green (3-9-0, 1-7-0) in Hanover, N.H.
