Mayfield nabs AP honor

Baker Mayfield was named The Associated Press college football Player of the Year yesterday, becoming the fourth Oklahoma quarterbac­k to win the award since it was establishe­d in 1998.

Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy favorite, easily outpointed Stanford running back Bryce Love, who came in second. Louisville quarterbac­k Lamar Jackson, the other finalist and last season’s Heisman winner, was third. Mayfield received 51 first-place votes from the 56 AP college football poll voters who submitted player of the year ballots, and a total of 157 points. …

Boston College junior defensive back and Everett native Lukas Denis was named to the Walter Camp All-America second team. …

Tennessee hired Alabama defensive coordinato­r Jeremy Pruitt as its head coach, capping a tumultuous search that cost an athletic director his job as the Volunteers attempt to recover from one of their most disappoint­ing seasons.

Babson 72, Amherst 71 — Shyheim Ulrickson knocked down three free throws with 0.5 seconds remaining to help the Beavers (5-4) edge the Mammoths (5-1) in Babson Park.

Tufts 73, UMass-Boston 58 — Luke Rogers scored 14 points off the bench to help the Jumbos (6-3) bounce the Beacons (4-4) at the Clark Athletic Center.

MIT 76, R.I. College 63 — Cameron Korb poured in 32 points, including eight 3-pointers, as the Engineers (8-1) threw over the Anchormen (2-8) in Cambridge.

Wentworth 60, Emmanuel 56 — Jason Ganley netted 21 points as the Leopards (6-2) stopped the Saints (1-7) at Yosinoff Court.

Mount Ida 109, Worcester St. 93 — Kevin Vanderhors­t’s 22 points lifted the Mustangs (6-2) over the host Lancers (1-9).

Brandeis 75, Newbury 62 — Latye Workman compiled 15 points and 18 rebounds as the Judges (2-5) caged the Nighthawks (1-5) in Waltham.

UMass-Dartmouth 88, Roger Williams 79 — Joshua Imadiyi logged 21 points and 11 boards as the Cor- sairs (6-1) topped the visit- ing Hawks (7-2).

Wheaton 65, Lasell 60 — Duaka Ekwensi recorded 18 points and 12 boards as the Lyons (8-3) unplugged the Lasers (2-6) in Newton. In Top 25 action:

Purdue 80, Valparaiso 50 — Vincent Edwards scored 15 points, Carson Edwards finished with 10 points, and the No. 21 Boilermake­rs (9-2) dominated the Crusaders (81) in West Lafayette, Ind.
