Leafs blank Oilers

Curtis McElhinney made 41 saves for his first shutout of the season and sixth overall, and Zach Hyman scored in the first minute in the Maple Leafs’ 1-0 victory against the Edmonton Oilers last night in Toronto.

McElhinney was making his fifth start of the season, giving Frederik Andersen a rest after he played in a victory Saturday night in Pittsburgh. Toronto improved to 2010-1 to move within three points of Tampa Bay for the Eastern Conference lead.

Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews was held out because of an upper-body injury. He took an accidental hit to the head from teammate Morgan Rielly late in Saturday’s game.

Blackhawks 3, Coyotes 1 — Corey Crawford made 31 saves, Artem Anisimov scored with 4:47 left in the third period and host Chicago beat Arizona, which has lost four straight.

It was the Blackhawks’ second straight win after dropping five in a row.

Blues 3, Sabres 2 — Vladimir Tarasenko scored with 35 seconds left in overtime, and shorthande­d St. Louis edged visiting Buffalo.

Brayden Schenn and Paul Stastny also scored for the Blues, Joel Edmundson had two assists and Jake Allen made 22 saves.

Wild 4, Sharks 3 — Nino Niederreit­er scored 3:26 into overtime and Minnesota won in San Jose despite squanderin­g a three-goal lead.

Eric Staal scored twice and Ryan Murphy added a goal as the Wild extended their winning streak on the Sharks to four games. Tomas Hertl tapped in a loose puck for San Jose with five minutes left in regulation to tie it at 3.
