Cautious Vonn skips super-G

Lindsey Vonn pulled out of a World Cup super-G race yesterday in Val D’Isere, France, because of a sore knee.

The 33-year-old American skier did not say which knee hurts, but has injured both before. She took part in yesterday’s early-morning inspection at the French Alpine resort, but then decided against racing as a precaution­ary measure and flew home.

Vonn secured her first win of the season and record-extending 78th in Saturday’s super-G on the same Oreiller-Killy course.

In the race, Olympic champion Anna Veith won for the first time in more than two years. The 28-yearold Austrian who has been battling back from injury clocked 1:05.77, well ahead of Tina Weirather of Lichtenste­in and Italian Sofia Goggia . .. .

Marcel Hirscher dominated both runs to take a record fifth straight win in the Alta Badia giant slalom in La Villa, Italy. The Austrian finished a massive 1.70 seconds ahead of Norwegian rival Henrik Kristoffer­sen, with Zan Kranjec of Slovenia 1.82 behind in third.

Olympic and three-time world champion Ted Ligety moved up from seventh after the opening run to finish fifth for his best result in more than a year.

Soccer: Kaka calls it a career

Former Ballon d’Or winner Kaka announced on Brazilian TV that he is retiring from soccer at age 35.

A graceful midfielder, Kaka won 92 caps for Brazil, scoring 29 goals and featuring at three World Cups. He was part of the Brazil squad that lifted the global trophy in 2002 . . . .

Manchester United kept pace with runaway English Premier League leaders Manchester City, as Romelu Lukaku scored the opener in a 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion. Jesse Lingard scored the second as the Red Devils stay 11 points behind City.

Liverpool had no problem scoring against Bournemout­h, posting a 4-0 road win where Mohamed Salah scored to move to 20 goals on the season and the Reds jumped over Arsenal into fourth . . . .

Luis Suarez and Paulinho scored twice as Barcelona routed Deportivo La Coruna, 4-0, to extend its lead atop Spain’s La Liga over to six points over Atletico Madrid. It’s 11 over Real Madrid heading into next weekend’s “El Classico” in Madrid.
