CRAZY ‘8’ TRAILER HITS

-

The first trailer for the all-female flick “Ocean’s 8” was just released, and Cambridge-raised Mindy Kaling was quick to share it with fans.

Kaling’s castmates comprise a motley crew of gals: celebrated actresses Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Sarah Paulson, as well as R&B star Rihanna and rapper Awkwafina.

In the trailer, we see Bullock as Debbie Ocean, the sister of fellow conman Danny Ocean, as she’s released from prison on parole. It would appear that heist mastery runs in the family, with Lady Ocean planning to pull off an elaborate theft of her own.

Basically, the movie looks an awful lot like it’s copycatting “Ocean’s 11,” the 2001 hit that launched the modern franchise made famous by George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. The differences: This time around, the crew of criminals are girls only and, instead of scheming for casino cash, they’re looking to crash the Met Gala.

Sneaking into the event, which Vogue’s Anna Wintour hosts each year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to benefit its Costume Institute, would be a great feat itself. But the gang of thieves has even more at stake: They want to swipe a diamond necklace worth more than $100 million straight off the neck of its wearer, played by Hathaway.

Just like with the latest version of “Ghostbusters” that hit theaters last year, the “Ocean’s 8” spinoff has already caught flak. But Bullock has been quick to shut down the haters.

“I’ll tell you, we’ve got some feisty women that will fight right back,” the actress told Entertainment Weekly earlier this month.

And don’t forget that the “Ocean’s 11” most of us know and love is also a remake. The real deal was a 1960 film starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.

So let’s see if the new chick-filled cast earns its own place in “Ocean’s” history when it hits theaters June 8.
