Jackets double up Leafs

-

Seth Jones had a goal an assist, and Joonas Korpisalo made 39 saves to help the Blue Jackets beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-2, last night in Columbus.

Lukas Sedlak, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Alexander Wennberg also scored for the Jackets, who never trailed to end a two-game losing streak.

Columbus moved into tie for second place in a traffic jam of teams battling for first in the Metropolitan Division.

Korpisalo, starting in place of Sergei Bobrovsky on the first night of a back-to-back, allowed a second-period goal to Jake Gardiner and another in the third to Mitchell Marner in playing one of his strongest games of the season. Toronto has lost four of its last five.

Former Blue Jackets goalie Curtis McElhinney, starting for Toronto in place of Frederik Andersen on the second leg of a back-to-back, made 33 saves.

Flyers 4, Red Wings 3 — Sean Couturier scored off his own rebound to snap a tie early in the third period and host Philadelphia beat Detroit for its seventh victory in eight games.

Robert Hagg added his first NHL goal, Dale Weise and Wayne Simmonds also scored as Philadelphia overcame two one-goal deficits. Claude Giroux had three assists, and Brian Elliott made 25 saves. The Flyers finished a five-game homestead 4-1.

Martin Frk and Mike Green had power-play goals, Gustav Nyquist also scored and Jimmy Howard made 27 saves for the Wings, who were trying to win three straight for the first time this season.

Couturier set a career high for goals in a season with his team-best 16th when he beat Howard with a third-chance shot at 5:57.

Before the game, the Red Wings’ Justin Abdelkader was fined $5,000 by the NHL for spearing the Islanders’ Scott Mayfield in Tuesday’s game in New York.

Flames 2, Blues 1 — Dougie Hamilton broke a tie at 7:57 of the third period and host Calgary Flames beat St. Louis.

Michael Frolik also scored for Calgary. Brayden Schenn had his team-leading 17th goal for the Blues, who have lost four of five.

Elsewhere in the NHL — The New York Islanders, who moved from their suburban Long Island home of Uniondale, N.Y., to Brooklyn in 2015, won a $1 billion development bid to build a new arena, hotel and other amenities at Belmont Park, in Elmont. Some details remain unclear, including when the team will begin playing in the new arena, and whether it will have to find a temporary home after it leaves the Barclays Center after the 2018-19 season.
