Georgia State too much for UMass

D’Marcus Simonds scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Georgia State to a 71-63 men’s basketball victory against UMass last night in Amherst.

COLLEGES

Simonds, who averages 20.9 points a game this season, was 9-of-18 from the field including three 3-pointers. Devin Mitchell added 14 points for the Panthers (8-4). Malik Benlevi had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists and Jeff Thomas chipped in 12 points.

Luwane Pipkins and Carl Pierre led UMass (6-6) with 14 points apiece.

St. Bonaventur­e 84, Northeaste­rn 65 — Matt Mobley scored 23 points, Jaylen Adams added 15 and the Bonnies (9-2) dominated the Huskies (75) in St. Bonaventur­e, N.Y., snapping their five-game winning streak.

Anthony Green led Northeaste­rn with 15 points and eight rebounds, but the Huskies shot just 36.2 percent from the floor and 6-of-25 on 3-pointers. Vasa Pusica scored 13 points, and Devon Begley chipped in with 12 off the bench.

Houston 70, Providence 59 — Rob Gray scored 24 points as the Cougars (10-2) defeated the Friars (8-4) in the Hall of Fame Holiday Classic at Mohegan Sun.

Rodney Bullock scored 24 points with eight rebounds for the Friars. Jalen Lindsey added 11 and Jackson 10.

George Washington 68, New Hampshire 64 — In Washington, Patrick Steeves scored a seasonhigh 23 points, Yuta Watanabe added 18 points and 11 rebounds and the Colonials (6-6) edged the Wildcats (3-9) in the first-ever meeting between the schools.

Central Connecticu­t 84, Maine 57 — In New Britain, Conn., Tyler Kohl had 18 points, a career-high 14 rebounds and six assists to help the Blue Devils (6-6) crush the Black Bears (3-10), whose Aaron Calixte scored 16 points.

In Top 25 action:

Wofford 79, North Carolina 75 — Fletcher Magee scored 27 points to help the Terriers (8-4) stun the No. 5 Tar Heels (10-2) in Chapel Hill, N.C., snapping the reigning national champions’ 23-game home winning streak.

Wofford led the entire second half and by as many as 14 points before holding off UNC’s lategame run for a huge upset.

Duke 104, Evansville 40 — Freshman Wendell Carter Jr. scored a season-best 27 points, and the No.4 Blue Devils (12-1) routed the Purple Aces (10-3) in Durham, N.C.

West Virginia 77, Coppin State 38 — Teddy Allen scored a careerhigh 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the No. 10 Mountainee­rs (10-1) cruised past the Eagles (0-12) in Morgantown, W. Va.

Baylor 80, Southern 60 — Manu Lecomte scored 22 points and the No.18 Bears (10-2) won their fifth straight, using a 13-0 run in the first half to cruise past the Jaguars (3-9) in Waco, Texas.

Tennessee 66, Furman 61 — In Knoxville, Tenn., Grant Williams (14 points) broke a tie with 54 seconds left, Jordan Bowden led with 21 points and the No. 21 Volunteers (8-2) snapped the Paladins’ (9-4) five-game winning streak.

Seton Hall 89, Wagner 68 — Khadeen Carrington scored 26 points and Angel Delgado added 15 points and 10 rebounds, leading the No.23 Pirates (10-2) to a win against the Seahawks (7-3) in Newark, N.J.

Creighton 116, SC Upstate 62 — Marcus Foster scored 16 points and the No. 25 Bluejays (10-2) shot nearly 70 percent in a blowout of the Spartans (4-11) in Omaha, Neb.

Women’s hoops

Northeaste­rn 65, New Mexico State 64 — Shannon Todd scored 14 points, Jess Genco added 12 points and nine rebounds and Zoe Zwerling chipped in 11 points as the Huskies (5-5) held off the Aggies (4-7) at the Long Beach Classic in Long Beach, Calif.

Brooke Salas (17 points) missed a potential winning shot in the final seconds for New Mexico State.

Florida Gulf Coast 65, Harvard 56 — Taylor Rooks had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Madeline Raster added 12 points, but the Crimson (5-5) fell to the Eagles (11-3) in Fort Myers. Football

Louisiana Tech 51, SMU 10 — J’mar Smith threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score, while his defensive mates scored twice as the Bulldogs (7-6) rolled over the Mustangs (7-6), who committed six turnovers, in the Frisco Bowl in Frisco, Texas.
