Move to open another Clinton probe is an act of desperation

-

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Jeff Session’s job is as imperiled as ever, and it looks like he’s hoping to keep his post a little longer.

Under fire from President Trump as well as some GOP lawmakers who are now openly calling for his head, Sessions has been busy working to open yet another Hillary Clinton probe in an apparent effort to appease the increasingly irritated president and his supporters.

The Department of Justice is gathering new details about the way the former secretary of state and her aides handled classified information that was sent over Clinton’s private server, according to a report by The Daily Beast. Justice officials could also take a new look at immunity agreements made by Clinton aides, according to the report.

Recall that Trump, who has repeatedly criticized Sessions for recusing himself from the Russia probe, reportedly called Sessions an “idiot” and demanded his resignation in May after special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed by Sessions’s deputy, Rod Rosenstein. Although Sessions drafted a resignation letter, Vice President Mike Pence and others convinced Trump not to accept it at the time.

That was then.

In the months since, Trump has repeatedly excoriated Sessions for not launching a new Clinton probe.

“Crooked Hillary Clinton’s top aid, Huma Abedin, has been accused of disregarding basic security protocols. She put Classified Passwords into the hands of foreign agents,” Trump tweeted Tuesday after the Justice Department released emails from close Clinton aide Abedin that were part of the last DOJ Clinton probe. “Jail! Deep State Justice Dept must finally act?”

Now GOP lawmakers have joined in.

“Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the Russia investigation, but it would appear he has no control at all of the premier law enforcement agency in the world,” Reps. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), wrote in a Washington Examiner op-ed yesterday.

Meadows, who chairs the conservative House Freedom Caucus, and Jordan, an ardent critic of the Mueller investigation who like Trump has demanded further scrutiny of Clinton and those within her circle, blasted Sessions over his inability to rein in the Russia probe and for leaks from within the department.

“If Sessions can’t address this issue immediately, then we have one final question needing an answer: When is it time for a new attorney general?” they wrote. “Sadly, it seems the answer is now.”

That is unless Sessions acts quickly to pacify members of his own party, which he seems all too willing to do.
