President Trump ripped into the author of a scathing new book that questions his ability to govern yesterday — calling it a “work of fiction” written by “a fraud” — and defended his mental fitness, tweeting that he is “really smart” and “a very stable genius.”

“Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart,” Trump tweeted from Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, adding, “I went from VERY successful businessman, to top T.V. Star ... to President of the United States (on my first try). I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius ... and a very stable genius at that!”

His defensive comments were spurred by the release of Michael Wolff’s “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” which depicts Trump as an undisciplined man-child who didn’t actually want to win the White House, spends his evenings eating cheeseburgers in bed and watching television.

Trump, in response, slammed Wolff as a “total loser” and “a fraud” who wrote what he called a “work of fiction.”

He also ripped into his embattled former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, who he has referred to as “Sloppy Steve” since the release of excerpts suggesting he referred to a controversial meeting at Trump Tower between Donald Trump Jr. and other campaign officials as “treasonous” and “unpatriotic.”

“I guess sloppy Steve brought him in the White House quite a bit and it was one of those things. That’s why sloppy Steve is now looking for a job,” Trump said.

When asked about the tweets during a press appearance yesterday, the Ivy League graduate was ready for the question.

“I went to the best colleges for college,” said Trump, who holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

“I was a very excellent student, came out, made billions and billions of dollars, became one of the top business people, went to television and for 10 years was a tremendous success, as you probably have heard, ran for president one time and won.”
