COMEDY GOLD GETS POLISHED

Seth enlists Amy, Tina to help at tonight’s Globes

-

SNL veteran Seth Meyers is all about the phone-a-friend when it comes to funny business. While crafting his opening monologue for tonight’s

Golden Globe Awards, the host admitted that he had to call on former colleagues Tina Fey and, in particular, Burlington native Amy Poehler for help polishing his punchlines.

“I’m constantly talking to them,” the “Late Night” host told People magazine. “I’m going to see Amy today and going to run through stuff with her. She’s long been my spirit animal and continues to be to this day.”

Primarily, the comedian has been working with Poehler on his opener, which sets the tone for the entire evening. As he put it, “If the monologue goes well, then there’s a real looseness to the rest of the night.”

This year, Meyers said he feels responsible to confront

Hollywood’s widespread issue of sexual misconduct during the Golden Globes monologue. So he’ll be needing to serve up some Grade-A humor to give us a little comedic relief after addressing the serious stuff.

Luckily, he will have Poehler, who’s also a presenter, and Fey in the wings feeding him material.

Whenever they hosted the awards show — that’s from 2013 to 2015 — Meyers was part of a crew of writers who’d concoct last-minute jokes and bits for the gals to use onstage. And now that he’s serving as the show’s emcee, he’s cashing in those favors by enlisting his fellow SNL alum in on-site help.

In addition to these lovely ladies, Meyers was also planning on picking the brain of another past emcee, Ricky Gervais, who “deserves a lot of credit. He really reset the idea of what a Globes host could be in the modern era — something that could be great comedy,” Meyers said.

To watch Meyers entertain not only a full house at the Beverly Hilton, but also an expected audience of around 20 million people, tune into NBC from 8 to 11 p.m. tonight.
