Pipkins, Pierre lift UMass by Dayton

Luwane Pipkins scored 25 points and fellow freshman Carl Pierre of Boston added 15 as UMass beat Dayton, 62-60, yesterday in Atlantic 10 men’s basketball in Dayton, Ohio.

UMass made it a game with a 14-2 run — with seven points from Pierre — spanning halftime. The Minutemen (8-8, 1-2) trailed 30-20 with 3:21 left in the first half and Dayton (7-8, 1-2) didn’t score again until the 17:31 mark of the second half.

Harvard 61, Dartmouth 51 —

Seth Towns scored 16 points with three 3-pointers, leading four into double figures as the Crimson (6-9, 1-0) used the long ball to hold off the Big Green (48, 0-1) in their Ivy League opener in Lavietes Pavilion.

URI 81, George Washington 60 — Jared Terrell hit 4-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc and the Rams (11-3, 3-0) thumped the Colonials (8-8, 1-2) in an Atlantic 10 play in Washington.

UConn 70, East Carolina 65 —

In Hartford, Conn., Jalen Adams scored 18 points and the Huskies (8-7, 1-2) held off the Pirates (7-8, 1-3) for their first American Athletic Conference win this season.

UNH 64, Albany 61 — Tanner Leissner scored 19, Josh Hopkins added 13, and the reserves helped spark the Wildcats (5-11, 1-1) to an America East win over the Great Danes (12-4, 0-2) in Durham, N.H.

Maine 76, Binghamton 73 — Aaron Calixte swished two free throws with 1.1 seconds on the clock and Isaiah White picked off the final inbounds pass as the Black Bears (4-13, 1-1) held onto a come-frombehind win to spoil the America East opener for the Bearcats (9-7, 0-1) in Binghamton, N.Y.

Georgia Tech 74, Yale 60 — Jose Alvarado tied a career high with 23 points and Josh Okogie added 20 to send the Yellow Jackets (87) past the Bulldogs (7-9) during nonconfere­nce play in Atlanta.

Vermont 71, UMBC 56 — Payton Henson scored 14 points with a career-high 13 rebounds and the Catamounts (11-5, 2-0 America East) beat the Retrievers

In Tampa, Napheesa Collier had 25 points and 11 rebounds and the top-ranked Huskies (13-0, 3-0 American Athletic Conference) remained unbeaten with a rout of the Bulls (12-4, 2-1).

St. Bonaventur­e 69, UMass 59 — Hailey Leidel had 20 points for the Minutewome­n (8-8, 0-3) in an Atlantic 10 loss to the Bonnies (6-10, 1-2) in Olean, N.Y.

Dartmouth 63, Harvard 56 —

Taylor Rooks led all scorers with 23 points for the Crimson (7-6, 0-1) but the Big Green (9-5, 1-0) prevailed in an Ivy League game in Hanover, N.H.

Men’s hockey

Harvard 4, Union 3 — Goalie Merrick Madsen turned aside 35 shots and forward Henry Bowlby had two goals, including the game-winner with 5.1 seconds remaining in overtime, to lift the Crimson (7-6-1, 6-3-0 ECAC) past the Dutchmen (11-11-1, 7-3-0) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

Forward Adam Gaudette posts two goals and two assists to lead the ninth-ranked Huskies (12-53) to a win over the Falcons (7-84) at Matthews Arena.

UMass-Lowell 8, UMass 3 —

Forward Ryan Lohin had two goals and two assists to lead the River Hawks (12-9-0, 8-6-0) to a Hockey East win over the Minutemen (9-9-0, 3-5-0) at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.

BC 3, Northern Michigan 3 —

Christophe­r Brown had a shorthande­d goal as the No.13 Eagles (10-8-3) tied with the Wildcats (11-10-3) in the consolatio­n game of the IceVegas Invite in Las Vegas.

Providence 5, Merrimack 2 —

Kasper Björkqvist notched two goals as the No.11 Friars (14-7-1, 7-4-1 HE) surged past the Warriors (6-11-4, 3-7-2) in Providence.

UNH 4, Brown 4 — Liam Blackburn scored two goals to help the Wildcats (9-9-2) skate by the Bears (5-8-2) in Durham, N.H.

AIC 4, Holy Cross 2 — Kyle Stephan had a goal for the Yellow Jackets (8-12-2, 7-8-2) in a Altantic Hockey win over the Crusaders (7-8-7, 6-4-6) in Worcester.

Endicott 8, Tufts 1 — Ross Olsson of Billerica scored twice for the No. 2-ranked Gulls (14-1-1) in a win over the Jumbos (1-9-1).

Maine 4, Boston University 1 — Deziray De Sousa notched her first goal of the season but it wasn’t enough to lift the Terriers (7-11-4, 3-8-3) past the Black Bears (13-6-3, 7-3-2) in Hockey East play at Walter Brown Arena.
