Flyers roll old pal

Schenn gets salute, but Philly romps

-

Sean Couturier scored two goals, Claude Giroux had a goal and two assists, and the Flyers spoiled Brayden Schenn’s return to Philadelphia with a 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues yesterday.

Scott Laughton, Jordan Weal and Wayne Simmonds also scored, Jakub Voracek earned his NHL-high 41st assist and Brian Elliott made 28 saves against his former team in the Flyers’ third win in four games.

Ivan Barbashev, Paul Stastny and Colton Parayko scored and Jake Allen made 33 saves in a sluggish performance by the Blues, whose three-game win streak ended.

Schenn scored 109 goals in six years in Philly, including 25 last season. The Flyers played a video tribute at the first timeout, drawing cheers as Schenn waved to the crowd. By then the Flyers — who honored late founder Ed Snider for his philanthropy on what would have been his 85th birthday — were already up 2-0.

Maple Leafs 3, Canucks 2 — Auston Matthews and Tyler Bozak scored in the third period and again in the shootout, and Toronto grabbed a second straight shootout win, this time against visiting Vancouver. Frederik Andersen stopped 2-of3 shootout attempts after making 34 saves for the Leafs.

Canucks star rookie Brock Boeser appeared to have won it with a blistering shot 45 seconds into overtime, but replays showed the puck went off one post and then another without crossing the line.

Rangers 2, Coyotes 1 — In Glendale, Ariz., Henrik Lundqvist stopped 37 shots through overtime and all three he faced in the shootout, Mika Zibanejad scored in the tiebreaker and New York won its third in five games.

Jimmy Vesey scored the tying goal in the second period for the Rangers, who went to overtime for the fifth time in seven games. Brady Skjei took a slashing penalty on Arizona’s Clayton Keller at 1:29 of overtime, setting up a Coyotes power play. However, Arizona couldn’t take advantage.

Senators 6, Lightning 3 — Ryan Dzingel scored twice and Mark Stone had a goal and two assists to help host Ottawa beat leagueleading Tampa Bay, which allowed six goals for the first time this season.

Matt Duchene, Zack Smith and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scored for the Senators, who won consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 13-16 despite squandering a 3-0 first-period lead. Craig Anderson stopped 45 shots.

Avalanche 7, Wild 2 — Carl Soderberg had two power-play goals, Nathan MacKinnon also scored with the man-advantage and added two assists, and Colorado beat Minnesota in Denver to push its season-best win streak to five games. Jonathan Bernier stopped 34 shots while filling in for starter Semyon Varlamov for the second straight game..

Prior to the game, the Avalanche retired former star Milan Hejduk’s No. 23 jersey. Hejduk played his entire 14-year career with Colorado and was part of the team’s 2001 Stanley Cup championship team.

Stars 5, Oilers 1 — Linemates Alexander Radulov, Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin scored firstperiod goals within a span of 61⁄2 minutes, leading Dallas past visiting Edmonton, outscored 16-2 in losing three of its last four.

Elsewhere in the NHL — Jimmy Howard will miss Detroit’s game against Tampa Bay tonight with a lower-body injury he suffered in Friday night’s win over Florida.
