IN L.A., BLACK IS THE NEW GOLD

-

The latest trend in Hollywood: jumping on the wear-black bandwagon.

Before even rolling out the red carpet at the 2018 Golden Globes, celebrities were all too eager to show they were behind the #whywewearblack protest on social media.

In December, word got out that stars were planning to don the dark color en masse at the annual awards show to make a stance against the sexual misconduct they supposedly knew nothing about. And yesterday, a slew of celebs flooded our news feeds with videos of themselves proclaiming their reasons for being a part of the movement.

Actresses Eva Longoria and Natalie Portman posted a video of themselves explaining the movement, while rocking some #TimesUp T-shirts, of course.

“We wear black for many reasons,” Longoria said. “One, to support the brave women who have come out with their stories. To those that are still silenced, we are with you.”

“We wear black because we’re looking forward to a new day where the powerful do not exploit others,” Portman added.

Rashida Jones shared a clip that included fellow stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Kerry Washington, Brie Larson, Tessa Thompson and Reese Witherspoon.

“I know there’s been a lot of talk about actresses wearing black to the Golden Globes,” Jones started to say, with Washington adding, “But we’re only wearing black because we want to stand with you, our sisters across the globe.”

Mark Ruffalo went solo with his explanation, encouraging folks to also wear black “to support a lot of really wonderful, courageous women who are asking for fairness in the workplace by stopping sexual harassment and harassment in general. It’s been a long time coming and we’re here. And it’s exciting.”

Rosario Dawson also took the selfie-video approach, telling all of Instagram, “We wear black to symbolize solidarity, that the death knell has stuck on abuse of power, and that it’s time to celebrate each other. Not just the nominees on film and television screens, but our storytellers who have bravely come forward and courageously shared their personal stories, which have liberated so many of us. Me too.”

Jennifer Lopez, joined by boyfriend Alex Rodriguez, went one step further with her activism by posting an emotional video from Puerto Rico, where she’s helping with Hurricane Maria relief work.

“Today is the Golden Globes in Los Angeles, and a lot of the women with #TimesUp are standing up for equality — to be treated equally — and for sexual harassment,” she said, choking up. “And I stand here today in black to do the same — from far away — and it’s the same thing with here in Puerto Rico; we want to be treated equally.”
