Stars put red carpet in the black

-

Hollywood A-listers took statement dressing to a new level last night at the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards by adhering to a black-only dress code — but the backlash started before the first limo pulled up to the red carpet. In the Twitterverse, posters to #theyallknew slammed Hollywood for hypocrisy: “While these rich enablers R wearing black to the Golden Globes, they will be reminded #TheyAllKnew.” “Wearing a black dress and jewelry that cost more than a car or home on a red carpet is not the answer!” “The Time's Up initiative spurred the movement to wear black as a show of solidarity against sexual harassment and for gender equality in the workplace.”

“Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You'll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa,” Rose McGowan tweeted last month. McGowan was referring to disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein (his estranged wife, Georgina Chapman, is the designer behind the label Marchesa, a red carpet staple). Foreign Press Association member Jenny Cooney tweeted, “Why should women not stand proud and in living color to show we will not be subdued and held down?” The Hollywood Reporter noted a run on black gowns, dresses and ensembles in advance of the Globes, and judging by the sea of ebony last night, actors got the memo. Do you think wearing black on the red carpet made an effective statement, or was it Hollywood hypocrisy? Take the poll at bostonherald.com.
