Occeus, Huskies shoot down JMU

Shawn Occeus made four 3-pointers and scored 18 points to help Northeaste­rn beat James Madison, 80-67, yesterday at Matthews Arena.

Maxime Boursiquot added 13 points, Vasa Pusica 12 and Tomas Murphy 10 for Northeaste­rn (10-6, 3-1 CAA). Boursiquot, Pusica and Donnell Gresham Jr. each had three 3s as the Huskies made a season-high 14-of-30 from distance. Pusica contribute­d a career-high nine assists as NU had 24 helpers on 29 field goals.

Darius Banks scored 16 points for James Madison (4-13, 0-4). Matt Lewis added 14, and Develle Phillips and Stuckey Mosley had 11 each.

The Dukes trailed by 21 points with 14:03 remaining in the game but went on a 15-5 spurt with seven points from Lewis and six by Antanee Pinkard. Then Pusica hit a 3 and Bolden Brace’s first dunk of the season made it 69-53. The Huskies led by as least 12 the rest of the way.

Iona 84, Fairfield 65 — In New Rochelle, N.Y., Deyshonee Much scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Gaels (9-7, 3-1 MAAC) over the Stags (6-9, 1-3).

Bradford’s Tyler Nelson led Fairfield with 16 points.

Saint Peter’s 84, Quinnipiac 58 — In Jersey City, N.J., Nick Griffin hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 and Elijah Gonzales added 15 points and nine assists to power the Peacocks (8-7, 2-2 MAAC) over the Bobcats (5-11, 2-2). In top 25 action:

Ohio St. 80, Michigan St. 64 — In Columbus, Ohio, Keita Bates-Diop had a career-high 32 points, and the Buckeyes (13-4, 4-0 Big Ten) stunned the No. 1 Spartans (15-2, 3-1).

Overachiev­ing OSU put together an electrifyi­ng 12-0 run to finish the first half and kept its foot on the gas to give first-year coach Chris Holtmann a signature win.

Mistake-prone MSU lost for the first time in the last 15 games, dating back to a seven-point loss to then-No. 1 Duke on Nov. 14.

Arizona St. 80, Utah 77 — In Salt Lake City, Shannon Evans scored 22 points, and the No. 4 Sun Devils (13-2, 1-2 Pac 12) held on for a choppy win over the Utes (10-5, 2-2) to end a twogame losing streak.

Wichita St. 95, South Florida 57 — In Wichita, Kan., Shaquille Morris scored 15 points to lead a balanced scoring effort, and the No. 9 Shockers (13-2, 3-0 AAC) blew out the Bulls (7-10, 0-4).

Zach Brown had 13 points, and Markis McDuffie scored 12 for Wichita State. Darral Willis scored 11 points.

Miami 80, Florida St. 74 — In Coral Gables, Fla., 5-foot-7 freshman Chris Lykes scored a season-high 18 points, and the No. 15 Hurricanes (13-2, 2-1 ACC) withstood a late rally by the No. 24 Seminoles (12-3, 1-2).

Roxbury’s Bruce Brown scored a season-high 23 points for Miami.

Cincinnati 76, SMU 56 — In Highland Heights, Ky., Jacob Evans III scored 18 points, and Gary Clark had a big second half as the No. 19 Bearcats (14-2, 3-0 AAC) pulled away to a win over the Mustangs (12-5, 2-2), extending the longest active home-court winning streak in the country.

Elon 78, Northeaste­rn 71 — In Elon, N.C., Claudia Ortiz erupted for 31 points, but the Phoenix (104, 2-1 CAA) dropped the Huskies (7-8, 2-2).

Women’s hockey

Boston College 5, New Hampshire 1 — In Durham, N.H., Caitrin Lonergan compiled two goals and two assists as the No. 2 Eagles (18-1-3, 12-0-3 Hockey East) tamed the Wildcats (9-8-5, 6-5-3).

Maine 3, Boston University

2 — At Walter Brown Arena, Tereza Vanisova scored twice as the Black Bears (14-6-3, 8-3-2 Hockey East) edged the Terriers (7-12-4, 3-9-3).
