Rags-to-riches story a far cry from Trump

- Joyce Ferriabough Bolling is a political strategist and a communications specialist.

All the talk in 2008 was whether Oprah Winfrey would enter the world of politics, something she reportedly was loathe to do, to endorse a freshman senator named Barack Obama who dared run for president.

She put her superstar power behind his candidacy and the rest is history.

Now many feel it could be her turn.

Her emotional sidewinder of a speech Sunday night as the first African-American woman to be awarded the Golden Globe’s Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award isn’t the first time people have speculated whether Oprah could be a strong and credible candidate.

I know some of you are thinking: “No, not another celebrity.” But unlike the celebrity currently in office, Oprah wasn’t born with a silver spoon in her mouth.

This strong and accomplished black woman, comfortable in her skin, is beloved because she can relate to the plight of the common man and woman. Hers is a rags-to-riches story, with the climb to success for a black woman steeper.

An Oprah Winfrey presidency would most definitely usher in a can-do and upbeat spirit, a definite contrast to the “on edge” spirit so many of us are feeling today perpetrated by our current self-proclaimed “genius” president who denigrates the dignity of the office with sordid tweet bombs and vicious name-calling.

Oprah is humble in her unquestionable brilliance.

I know some will ask where’s her political credibility, but politics is about relationships and Oprah is a master at cultivating them worldwide.

Add to that she can pay her own way.

She would benefit from women demanding change in our nation following the many sexual harassment and assault allegations of the #MeToo movement — something Oprah spoke so eloquently about at the Golden Globes.

She would also benefit from last year’s marches that drew hundreds of thousands of women. Those demonstrations are still fresh in many minds.

She would also benefit from the tsunami of women — particularly black women — being swept into political office.

The question is will she run? If she chooses to, there is no doubt she would be a formidable candidate.
