Rain spurs flood warning

Today’s rain could melt snow packs, bringing significant flooding across Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, officials warned.

The Massa- chusetts Emergency Management Agency is warning of a “multi-impact rain event” with “several bouts of heavy rain” tonight through tomorrow morning.

“Flooding potential is still being fine-tuned. Depending on how much rain falls, more rivers may go into flood stage,” the agency reported. “There is still a lot of uncertainty on where exactly the dense fog will set up Friday and Saturday. Ice accretion amounts could change depending on how quickly the cold air moves into the region on Saturday.”

The rain and flooding could affect this evening’s commute, MEMA added, while black ice could form on roads tomorrow as temperatures drop.

National Weather Service meteorologist Alan Dunham said some areas may see up to three inches of rain, with most receiving 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain. Combined with ice breakups from last week’s storm, flooding conditions may vary in some areas.

“No one area is more susceptible to another, that includes all of southern New England,” Dunham said.

Dunham said the highpressure winds from the south that brought warmer temperatures are moving away, ushering in a cold front. Today’s temperature will be in the 60s, and in the 50s tomorrow until around 1 p.m. when it’s expected to fall to the upper 20s. Sunday’s temperature will be in the upper 20s in the city and in the teens outside of Route 128.
