No. 8 Texas Tech wins Big 12 battle

Keenan Evans scored 20 points, Brandone Francis had a career-high 17 and No. 8 Texas Tech won the first-ever AP Top 10 matchup on its homecourt, beating secondrank­ed West Virginia, 72-71, yesterday in Lubbock, Texas.

The Mountainee­rs (15-2, 4-1 Big 12) couldn’t hold an 11-point lead in the final 13 minutes and had their nationlead­ing 15-game winning streak end. Jevon Carter had 28 points for West Virginia.

Now Texas Tech (15-2, 4-1) is part of a four-way tie atop the conference.

Villanova 78, St. John’s 71 — Donte DiVincenzo hit six 3-pointers and scored 25 points to help the No. 1 Wildcats (16-1, 4-1 Big East) silence a rowdy New York crowd and thwart the upset-minded Red Storm (10-8, 0-6), whose bid was led by 37 points from Shammorie Ponds.

Michigan 82, Michigan St. 72 — In East Lansing, Mich., Moritz Wagner scored a career-high 27 points, lifting the Wolverines (15-4, 4-2 Big Ten), who took the lead for good with 14:28 remaining, to the upset win against the rival and No. 4 Spartans (16-3, 4-2), whose recent struggles continued.

Purdue 81, Minnesota 47 — In Minneapoli­s, Vincent Edwards scored 25 points in 29 minutes for the No. 5 Boilermake­rs (17-2, 6-0 Big Ten) in a rout of the Gophers (13-6, 2-4), who have lost all three games since Reggie Lynch was suspended and Amir Coffey (shoulder) was sidelined.

Wichita St. 72, Tulsa 69 — Landry Shamet and backcourt mate Conner Frankamp each scored 16 points and the No. 5 Shockers (14-2, 5-0 American) were able to take the wind out of the Golden Hurricane (10-8, 3-3) down the stretch for the win.

Duke 89, Wake Forest 71 — In Durham, N.C., Marvin Bagley III had 30 points and 11 rebounds, and the No. 7 Blue Devils (15-2, 3-2 ACC) beat the Demon Deacons (89, 1-4) in a game coach Mike Krzyzewski missed due to a virus.

Oklahoma 102, TCU 97 — In Norman, Okla., Trae Young scored 29 of his 43 points after halftime, and the No. 9 Sooners (14-2, 4-1 Big 12) hit a school-record 19 3’s to put away the No. 16 Horned Frogs (13-4, 1-4) in overtime.

Xavier 92, Creighton 70 —

In Cincinnati, Trevon Bluiett posted 24 points and the No. 10 Musketeers (16-3, 4-2 Big East) recovered from backto-back road losses by routing the No. 25 Bluejays (14-3, 4-2) back on their homecourt.

Arizona St. 77, Oregon St. 75 — In Tempe, Ariz., Shannon Evans scored seven of his 22 points in a late 10-0 run and the No. 11 Sun Devils (14-3, 2-3 Pac-12) got 14 points from Cody Justice to beat the Beavers (10-7, 2-3).

Kansas 73, Kansas St. 72 —

In Lawrence, Kan., Devonte Graham led with 23 points, Malik Newman hit go-ahead foul shots late and the No. 12 Jayhawks (14-3, 4-1 Big 12) narrowly beat the Wildcats (12-5, 2-3).

Seton Hall 74, Georgetown 61 — In Newark, N.J., Desi Rodriguez and Myles Powell each scored 19 points, and Angel Delgado had 11 points and 13 rebounds, as the No. 13 Pirates (15-3, 4-1 Big East) beat the Hoyas (12-5, 2-4).

Cincinnati 78, S. Florida 55 — In Tampa, Jarron Cumberland had 18 points and the No. 14 Bearcats (15-2, 4-0 American) shrugged off a slow start and shot 70 percent in the second half to top the Bulls (7-11, 0-5).

Gonzaga 75, San Francisco 65 — Johnathan Williams finished with 17 points and Josh Perkins added 16 to lead the No. 15 Bulldogs (16-3, 6-0 West Coast) by the Dons (109, 2-4) for their 18th straight road win in league play.

Arizona 90, Oregon 83 — In Tucson, Ariz., Allonzo Trier scored 25 points, Deandre Ayton had 24 and the No. 17 Wildcats (14-4, 4-1 Pac-12) used an 8-0 run late to take the lead and put down the Ducks (12-6, 2-3).

Clemson 72, Miami 63 — In Clemson, S.C., Donte Grantham led with 18 points, and Mark Donnal drained two big second-half 3’s, as the No. 19 Tigers (15-2, 4-1 ACC) beat the No. 18 Hurricanes (13-3, 3-2).

UNC 69, Notre Dame 68 — In South Bend, Ind., Joel Berry II hit two free throws in the final seconds, Luke Maye had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and the No. 20 Tar Heels (14-4, 3-2 ACC) edged the Irish (13-5, 3-2).

Kentucky 74, Vanderbilt 67 — In Nashville, Tenn., Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 22 points and the No. 21 Wildcats (14-3, 4-1 SEC) took the lead late to beat the Commodores (6-11, 1-4).

Auburn 76, Mississipp­i St. 68 — In Starkville, Miss., Bryce Brown’s 23 points helped the No. 22 Tigers (161, 4-0 SEC) rally for a 14th straight win, against the Bulldogs (13-4, 1-3).

Tennessee 75, Texas A&M 62 — In Knoxville, Tenn., Jordan Bowden’s 15 points and 14 from Kyle Alexander paid off as the No. 24 Volunteers (12-4, 3-2 SEC) beat the Aggies (11-6, 0-5).

Florida St. 101, Syracuse 90 — In Tallahasse­e, Fla., Braian Angola had 24 points and the No. 24 Seminoles (13-4, 2-3 ACC) outlasted the Orange (12-6, 1-4), whose Tyus Battle went for 37 points.
