Rich get richer as Astros pick up Cole

The World Series champion Houston Astros boosted their rotation with another big arm, acquiring right-hander Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a five-player trade yesterday.

The Pirates got right-handers Joe Musgrove and Michael Feliz, third baseman Colin Moran and outfielder Jason Martin for their 27-year-old ace.

Cole was 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA last season, but is 59-42 for his career with a 3.50 ERA, and was a 19game winner in 2015 . . . .

All-Star closer Brad Hand and the San Diego Padres agreed to a three-year extension reportedly worth $19.75 million, with a fourth-year option. He went 3-4 with 21 saves and a 2.16 ERA last season.

Olympics: White makes third U.S. team

Shaun White made the U.S. Olympic team in grand fashion — scoring a perfect 100 at the U.S. Grand Prix event in Snowmass, Colo., to set himself up as a favorite to win a third gold medal.

Ben Ferguson finished fifth to secure his spot. joining White and Jake Pates on the Olympic team.

Spain’s Queralt Castellet won the women’s events, followed by Chloe Kim, Maddie Mastro and Kelly Clark. Kim has already qualified, while Mastro and Clark have the edge for the other two spots heading into next weekend’s final qualifying event . ...

Lauren Gibbs and Aja Evans were selected as the push athletes who will join pilots Elana Meyers Taylor and Jamie Greubel Poser on the U.S. Olympic women’s bobsled team. Lolo Jones, who pushed Meyers Taylor to a World Cup gold yesterday in St. Moritz, Switzerlan­d, did not make the team.

Skiing: Super win for Brignone

In the penultimat­e super-G before the Olympics, Federica Brignone timed 1:09.80 on the KarntenFra­nz Klammer course to win the women’s World Cup super-G in Bad Kleinkirch­heim, Austria. She denied then-leader Lara Gut her first win of the season, beating the Swiss former overall champion by 0.18. Cornelia Huetter of Austria was third.

American Lindsey Vonn finished 1.43 off the lead in ninth place, a day after she considered skipping the race to avoid the risk of getting injured on the partly weakened course.

Misc.: Kerber sweeps to Sydney title

Angelique Kerber won her ninth consecutiv­e match to start the season, beating Ashleigh Barty 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the Sydney Internatio­nal title for her 11th career crown . . . .

Bernard Tomic lost 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-4 to Lorenzo Sonego in the last round of qualifying for the main draw of the Australian Open. It will be the first time in 10 years that Tomic will miss his national championsh­ip, which begins tomorrow . . . .
