Firefighters save Brockton driver trapped in SUV
Authorities extricated an injured Brockton man who was trapped inside his SUV after a crash in Avon yesterday.
Brockton firefighters responded to a call of a rollover with someone trapped inside a vehicle just after 10 a.m. on the town line near West Main Street and Nichols Avenue in Avon, Brockton fire Capt. Shawn Kerr said.
Avon police were already on scene and later joined by Avon firefighters, who were able to pop open the rear door of the SUV, Kerr said, but were unable to remove the 41-year-old driver, whose legs were pinned by the dashboard and steering wheel column.
Kerr said the SUV was on its roof when authorities arrived and with the help of Brockton firefighters the driver was finally pulled from the vehicle.
Brockton police and fire secured a landing zone at North Junior High School on Oak Street in Brockton for the Boston MedFlight helicopter to transport the driver to a Boston hospital, Kerr said.
Avon fire Deputy Chief Stephen Hallissey said the man was unresponsive after the crash.
“We transported him with help from Brockton to Mass. General Hospital in Boston,” Hallissey said. “This was a single-vehicle accident, so no other cars were involved.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Hallissey said.
