Winter conditions return to Hub after short reprieve
Boston’s brief reprieve from snowy roads and sidewalks will end tonight, as a new coastal storm will dump up to 3 inches in the city and 6 inches in the suburbs overnight and lead to disruptive driving conditions for tomorrow’s rush hour.
Meteorologists said ugly weather traveling east from Canada will create a one-two punch, with a new storm brewing off the coast, hitting the region late tonight and continuing through tomorrow.
“Everybody will wake up to snow on the ground, there will be slick conditions and rough travel,” said Dave Dombek, a senior meteorologist from Accuweather. “It’s going to be disruptive for travel.”
The storm will drop up to 3 inches on Boston’s roads, but could pile up to 6 inches in the suburbs north and west of the city, Dombek said, and an alert from Accuweather warns “substantial travel delays and disruptions to daily activities” are likely. And he said ice on city streets could be an issue as snow is packed down over the day.
The storm comes two weeks after the so-called bombogenetic snow cyclone lashed Boston with fierce gusts of winds, flash floods and 18 inches of snow, followed by a deep freeze, and then temperatures that climbed to the high 50s before plunging again.
Dombek said the yoyoing temperatures could continue.
“Going forward, it might be a back-and-forth battle between mild weather and the cold, as opposed to the last two weeks with the cold air winning out,” he said.
