Jump off anti-Trump wagon, Mitt, and focus on Utah

Hey, Mitt Romney, a gentle suggestion: Try to focus on issues that matter to the voters of Utah and not the latest thing President Trump blurts out.

Democrats, despite their outrage, couldn’t have been more delighted when Trump reportedly used a vulgar term to describe Haiti, El Salvador and African countries when disparaging the immigration lottery.

Without a doubt, Trump’s worst enemy may be his own big, undisciplined mouth. And his opponents are using that to bolster their claims that he’s a racist.

Our former governor has also experienced thoughtcrime accusations from Democrats — remember how his concerted effort to hire women was used as evidence of sexism, thanks to his “binders” gaffe?

But Romney has now gleefully jumped on the Trumpracism bandwagon to aid his latest race for a U.S. Senate seat, tweeting: “The poverty of an aspiring immigrant’s nation of origin is as irrelevant as their race. The sentiment attributed to POTUS is inconsistent w/ America’s history and antithetical to American values. May our memory of Dr. King buoy our hope for unity, greatness, & ‘charity for all.’ ”

So this is how he plans to sell himself — as the Republican who will stand up to Trump.

Maybe it will work, but do voters really want to add to the divide in Washington — with a senator who can’t make up his mind whether to trash Trump or curry favor from him? Will they want their senator engaged in an endless, losing mud fight with the president?

You’ll remember how Romney tried to undermine Trump’s candidacy. He lost that fight and was next spotted exiting a secretary of state job interview. So now, as popular as Romney reportedly is in Utah, does he really want to demonstrate how ineffective, and frankly embarrassing, he could be in D.C.?

Romney doesn’t know how to play in the mud and that’s exactly where Trump will take him over the next year as he campaigns. It should come as no surprise if Trump ends up backing another candidate — while trashing Romney.

If Romney never took that meeting in Trump Tower he could at least claim a principled anti-Trump mantle. But he proved he cared more about his personal ambition by going there hat in hand — and proved himself a chump when he left empty-handed.

He just looks like a sore loser now. And if he keeps it up, he’ll probably just end up with more to be sore about.
