No. 23 Michigan wins on late FTs

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman made two free throws with 1.2 seconds left, lifting No. 23 Michigan to a 68-67 win against Maryland in a Big Ten men’s basketball game last night in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Kevin Huerter connected on a go-ahead 3-pointer on the previous possession for the shorthande­d Terrapins (14-6, 3-4), who trailed by 10 with five-plus minutes left in the game.

Moritz Wagner had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolverines (16-4, 5-2), and reserve Jordan Poole had 11 points.

Michigan was trailing by as much as 14 in the first half and was behind 30-20 at halftime, looking lethargic after an emotionall­y charged win against then-No.4 Michigan State two days earlier. The Wolverines opened the second half with a 10-0 run and later took the lead with 13:02 left while making three 3-pointers in 44 seconds.

Duke 83, Miami 75 — Gary Trent Jr. scored a season-high 30 points and the No. 5 Blue Devils (16-2, 14-2 ACC) needed less than three minutes to erase a 13-point second-half deficit, scoring 18 consecutiv­e points to overtake the No. 25 Hurricance­s (13-4, 2-3) in Coral Gables, Fla.

Duke scored 15 points in only six possession­s to rally, and the comeback included a trio of 3-pointers by Trent. He shot 9-for-14, 6-for-9 on treys.

Kansas 71, West Virginia 66 — Svi Mykhailiuk scored 17 points, including 12 in the final seven minutes, and the No. 10 Jayhawks (15-3, 5-1 Big 12) roared back from a big deficit to beat the No. 6 Mountainee­rs (15-3, 4-2) in Morgantown, W.Va. In New England games: Providence 70, Butler 60 — Kyron Cartwright scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to help the host Friars (13-6, 4-2 Big East) beat the Bulldogs (13-7, 3-4).

Providence trailed 29-25 at halftime but made its first eight shots of the second half.

New Hampshire 74, UMassLowel­l 62 — Tanner Leissner had 26 points and 12 rebounds, Iba Camara added 17 boards and the Wildcats (7-11, 3-1 America East) grounded the River Hawks (6-11, 0-4) in Lowell.

Jahad Thomas had his fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead UMass-Lowell.

Vermont 83, Maine 62 — Drew Urquhart scored a career-high 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting to lead the Catamounts (14-5, 4-0 America East) to their seventh straight victory, crushing the Black Bears (4-16, 1-4) in Burlington, Vt.

Salem State 83, Bates 81 — Tyreik McCauley (20 points) made the winning layup with four seconds left, Shaquan Murray added 19 points and the Vikings (13-3) edged the Bobcats (8-9) in Lewiston, Maine.

Women’s basketball

UConn 75, Texas 71 — Katie Lou Samuelson scored 19 points and Crystal Dangerfiel­d made two free throws with eight seconds left to help the top-ranked Huskies (16-0 survive an upset bid by the No.9 Longhorns (143) in Austin, Texas.

Tufts 74, UMass-Dartmouth 66 — Erica DeCandido had 24 points and nine rebounds, Jac Knapp added 18 points including four 3-pointers, and the Jumbos (15-2), ranked No.8 in Division 3, held off the Corsairs (11-3) in Dartmouth.

Women’s hockey

Norwich 9, N.E. College 1 — Amanda Conway scored a hat trick with two assists, leading the No. 3 Cadets (13-1-1, 7-0-0 New England Hockey) to a rout of the Pilgrims (2-13-1, 1-5-0) in Northfield, Vt.
