UFC boss: Despite noise, prez is a ‘stand-up guy’
Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White says President Trump, for all the controversy surrounding him, is a “stand-up” guy.
“I’m telling you. He says some crazy things and does some crazy things,” White told Boston Herald Radio yesterday. “He’s one of the most stand-up human beings that I have ever dealt with in the business. Fact.”
White said he stands by his vote and support for the president despite the running series of controversies around him.
“Since Trump has been the president of the United States this guy has called me 15, 20 times,” White said.
“I’m very anti-Hillary and obviously so was the rest of the country,” White said. “I’m always for whoever the best person is, but I obviously have a very strong relationship with President Trump.
“He called me to see if I wanted to start bringing UFC champions to the White House. You know, how they do when somebody wins the Super Bowl and stuff like that,” White said. “I’m going to go before the end of his term. I’m going to go to the White House to have dinner with him.”
He said Trump has also asked him if the UFC will get behind any initiatives tied to the opioid epidemic, according to White.
Though he spoke at the Republican National Convention in 2016 and remains a staunch supporter of Trump, White says he prefers to stay out of politics and has no firm political affiliation — though he’s planning to back the president for re-election in 2020.
White also says that he doesn’t mind what political affiliation anyone is and like many, was disgusted with the polarization and animosity that came with the 2016 election.
“I’m a Trump guy ... if you don’t like the way this turned out you should have voted. You lost ... you ride out your four years and then you vote again when the elections come up,” White said. “The way that people have acted and continue to act during this election is disgusting ... I don’t fault anybody for who they vote for or criticize anybody for who they voted for.”
