URI tops UMass, continues hot start

Jared Terrell scored 24 points with four 3-pointers and three steals, Stanford Robinson added 17 points with 12 rebounds, and Rhode Island beat UMass, 73-51, last night in Kingston, R.I., to open the Atlantic 10 Conference season 6-0 for the first time in school history.

Andre Berry scored 11 points and Cyril Langevine had 12 boards and three blocks for Rhode Island (14-3, 6-0), which won its ninth straight game and 13th straight at home.

Luwane Pipkins scored 13 points with four assists and C.J. Anderson added 10 points for the Minutemen (10-9, 3-3), which saw their threegame win streak end.

American 69, Boston University 58 — Sam Iorio scored a career-best 26 points to lead the Eagles (5-13, 2-5 Patriot) over the Terriers (9-9, 5-2) at Case Gym.

Cedric Hankerson scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds for BU.

Holy Cross 70, Army 66 — In Worcester, Jehyve Floyd had 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocks and Caleb Green scored 15 as the Crusaders (5-13, 2-5 Patriot) topped the Black Knights (11-7, 4-3).

Bentley 83, Adelphi 81 — In Waltham, Zach Gilpin buried a 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left in overtime to give the Falcons (10-7, 7-5 NE-10) the win over the Panthers (613, 2-9).

UMass-Boston 72, UMass-Dartmouth 68 — Michael Boyd’s 24 points helped the visiting Beacons (9-8, 3-3 LEC) tip the Corsairs (9-7, 2-4).

WPI 74, Emerson 73 — At Brown & Plofker Gym, Chris Rodgers drilled a jumper at the buzzer to lift the Engineers (9-7, 3-2 NEWMAC) over the Lions (8-8, 2-3).

Wheaton 89, Babson 77 — In Norton, Ryan Fogarty erupted for 31 points as the Lyons (10-5, 2-3 NEWMAC) handled the Beavers (9-7, 4-1).

Springfiel­d 68, MIT 65 — In Cambridge, Jake Ross compiled 26 points and 11 boards as the Pride (10-6, 4-1 NEWMAC) hurt the Engineers (14-2, 4-1).

Coast Guard 91, Clark 78 — In New London, Conn., Sean Graytok scored 27 points and the Bears (9-5, 1-4 NEWMAC) caged the Cougars (3-13, 0-5).

Salem St. 85, Bridgewate­r St. 79 — Drew Healy logged 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the host Vikings (14-3, 4-0 MASCAC) over the Bears (9-7, 2-1).

Trinity 73, Pine Manor 64 — In Chestnut Hill, Eric Gendron netted 16 points as the Bantams (12-4) trapped the Gators (7-8).

In top 10 action:

Villanova 88, Georgetown 56 — In Washington, the top-ranked Wildcats (17-1, 5-1 Big East) led by as many as 44 points and gave Patrick Ewing a rude welcome back to the schools’ rivalry, handing the Hoyas (12-6, 2-5) their worst loss in more than 40 years.

Jalen Brunson led the way with 18 points and seven assists for Villanova, which finished 17-for-33 on 3s.

SMU 83, Wichita St. 78 — In Wichita, Kan., Shake Milton hit five 3-pointers en route to a career-best 33 points and the Mustangs (13-6, 3-3 AAC) dropped the No. 7 Shockers (15-3, 5-1).

Wichita State had won 27 straight and 67-of-68 at Koch Arena.

Texas 67, Texas Tech 58 — In Austin, Texas, Kerwin Roach II scored 20 points and the Longhorns (12-6, 2-3 Big 12) upended the No. 8 Red Raiders (15-3, 4-2).

Women’s basketball

American 66, Boston University 50 — In Washington, Nia Irving netted 18 points but the Terriers (89, 3-4) fell to the Eagles (14-4, 7-0).
