Lewis drops in 16 as Harvard slips past Yale

Chris Lewis had 16 points and 11 rebounds last night and Harvard survived a late challenge to beat Yale, 54-52, in Ivy League men’s basketball in New Haven, Conn.

Justin Bassey made a trio of free throws with 2:11 left to give the Crimson (8-10, 3-0) a 52-49 lead. After two scoreless minutes, the Bulldogs (8-11, 1-2) had the ball in the final seconds with a chance to tie. Miye Oni missed a 3-point attempt with five seconds left and Harvard’s Seth Towns secured the rebound. Towns made two free throws to push the lead to five and Alex Copeland hit a 3 at the buzzer for Yale.

Harvard led by as many as 16 in the first half, but Yale rallied to take the lead at 49-47 on Oni’s layup with 5:11 left.

Towns and Corey Johnson added 11 points each for the Crimson.

Brown 64, Dartmouth 62 — Brandon Anderson scored 17 points and Zach Hunsaker got the winning bucket at the buzzer to lift the Bears (9-7, 2-1 Ivy) to a win over the Big Green (4-12, 0-3) in Providence.

Dartmouth’s Will Emery tied the game at 62 with the first of two free throws but missed the second shot and Matt DeWolf grabbed the defensive rebound with seven seconds left. Hunsaker took the ball down the right side of the court, cut toward the basket and banked in the floating jumper as time expired.

Hunsaker finished with 12 points for Brown.

Chris Knight had 12 points for Dartmouth.

Robert Morris 64, Sacred Heart 56 — In Pittsburgh, Dachon Burke scored 15 points to help the Colonials (13-9, 7-2) beat the Pioneers (7-15, 2-7) remain tied atop the Northeast Conference.

Sean Hoehn led Sacred Heart with 17 points and Kinnon LaRose added 10.

In Top 25 play:

Michigan State 76, Wisconsin 61 — Miles Bridges scored 24 points and the No.6 Spartans (19-3, 7-2 Big Ten) beat the Badgers (10-12, 3-6) in East Lansing, Mich., less than 12 hours after Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis announced his retirement amid the outcry over how the school handled allegation­s against Larry Nassar.

The Spartans have won three straight and Wisconsin has lost five of the last six games.

Women’s basketball

Northeaste­rn 64, Delaware 53 — Jess Genco had 18 points with seven assists and teammate Shannon Todd added 16 points for the Huskies (10-9, 5-3) in a Colonial Athletic Associatio­n win over the Blue Hens (12-7, 5-3) in Newark, Del.

Harvard 97, Yale 73 — Senior Taylor Rooks had 22 points for the Crimson (10-6, 2-1) in an Ivy League win over the Bulldogs (88, 1-2) at Lavietes Pavilion.

Amherst 46, Colby 37 — Jackie Nagle had 12 poitns with nine rebounds as the top-ranked Mammoths (19-0, 5-0 NESCAC) topped the Mules (7-10, 1-4) in Amherst.

Bowdoin 87, Hamilton 54 — In Clinton, N.Y., Abby Kelly had 14 points for the third-ranked Polar Bears (19-0, 5-0 NESCAC) during an easy win over the Continenta­ls (13-6, 1-4) and setting up today’s showdown of undefeated Division 3 powers in Amherst.

Men’s hockey

Maine 3, UMass 2 — Junior defenseman Rob Michel scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Black Bears (12-9-4, 6-6-3) to a Hockey East win against the Minutemen (11-12-1, 5-8-1) at Mullins Center in Amherst.

UMass-Lowell 3, Boston College 2 — Freshman forward Chris Schutz scored a goal and sophomore goaltender Tyler Wall made 25 saves to help the River Hawks (15-11-0, 10-7-0) skate to a Hockey East victory against the 16thranked Eagles (12-10-3, 12-5-0) at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.

Vermont 2, Merrimack 1 — Freshman Alex Esposito and sophomore Ross Colton posted a goal and an assist each to help the Catamounts (6-15-4, 3-9-3) skate to a Hockey East win against the Warriors (7-14-4, 4-10-2) at Lawler Rink in North Andover.

UConn 4, New Hampshire 2 — Spencer Naas scored the winner with 1:05 to play as the Huskies (10-16-2, 7-11-1) rallied with three goals in the third period of a Hockey East win over the Wildcats (912-4, 4-8-3) in Durham, N.H.

Cornell 3, Harvard 0 — Anthony Angello netted all three goals for the second-ranked Big Red (17-21, 11-1-1) in an ECAC win over the Crimson (9-7-4, 8-4-3) at BrightLand­ry Hockey Center. The loss snapped an eight-game (5-0-3) unbeaten streak for the Crimson.

Boston University 8, Arizona State 0 — Bobo Carpenter had three goals plus an assist and Brady Tkachuk added two goals for the Terriers (11-11-2) in a nonleague win over the Sun Devils (7-14-5) in Tempe, Ariz.

Women’s hockey

Vermont 5, Northeaste­rn 2 — Sophomore Ève-Audrey Picard scored two goals and an assist to lead the Catamounts (7-16-4, 4-113) to a Women’s Hockey East win against the Huskies (13-11-3, 9-82) in Burlington, Vt.

Boston College 5, Providence 0 — Ryan Little scored twice and Katie Burt made 25 saves to tie the NCAA all-time record with her 114th career win as the thirdranke­d Eagles (23-2-3, 16-1-3) prevailed in a Women’s Hockey East game against the 10thranked Friars (14-8-6, 10-4-4) at Kelley Rink.

Yale 3, Harvard 2 — Gianna Meloni made 29 saves to boost the Bulldogs (8-10-4, 6-7-2 ECAC) over the Crimson (8-11-1, 6-8-1) in New Haven, Conn.
