Four Spartans pick Heights
The Lawrence Academy football pipeline to Boston College is fully functional.
A trio of Boston Herald AllScholastics — two-way lineman Ryan Betro and tight ends Joey Luchetti and Cam Reddy — along with offensive lineman Finn Dirstine are heading to The Heights in the fall. They will join a quartet of former Spartans on the roster: running back A.J. Dillon, linebacker Doug Rodier, offensive lineman Eddy Fish and wide receiver Chris Garrison.
The Chestnut Hill invasion is music to the ears of Lawrence Academy head coach Paul Zukauskas. A former All-Scholastic lineman at BC High, Zukauskas went on to star at BC before spending four years with the Cleveland Browns (2001-04).
“I am 1,000 percent very excited for them,” Zukauskas said. “The school is very special for me. My wife (Claire) and I graduated from there as did my brother Tom, so we have a big family history with Boston College.
“I am very happy for the four kids we are sending there. They will get an opportunity to play football against the best players in the country, then also have plenty of opportunities outside of football when they graduate.”
With the NCAA adding an extra signing period to National Letter of Intent Day, several All-Scholastics took advantage of the December date to ink their NLIs. Among those who did so were Bridgewater-Raynham linebacker Bryce Shaw (Navy), Catholic Memorial wide receiver Jarrett Martin (Bryant), Central Catholic quarterback Bret Edwards (UNH), Belmont Hill wide receiver Jake Bobo (Duke), Brooks tight end Patrick Freiermuth (Penn State), St. Sebastian’s lineman Jonathan Pace (UConn) and the duo of Brighton tight end Jerrod Clark and Everett wide receiver Isaiah Likely (Coastal Carolina).
Likely will be part of a ceremonial signing event at Everett High this morning. Joining him will be defensive back Jason Maitre (BC), wide receiver Anthony Norcia (Merrimack), lineman Helber Fagundes (UMass), linebacker Duane Binns (URI) and running back Kevin Brown (URI).
While the Ivy League does not use the National Letter of Intent system, several Herald All-Scholastics will be heading there next fall. BC High running back Danny Abraham and his classmate, lineman Tommy Aicardi, are heading to Harvard. Abraham’s cousin, Xaverian defensive back Brian Abraham, and King Philip running back Shane Frommer will attend Yale, while Central Catholic running back Max Faro and Governor’s Academy lineman Cam Gagnon will play at Brown.
A trio of football All-Scholastics will head to different athletic ventures at the next level. Lexington quarterback Sal Frelick will play baseball at BC, while lacrosse is the next endeavor for Hopkinton wide receiver Will Abbott (Quinnipiac) and BC High linebacker Will Bowen (North Carolina).
All-Scholastic Harry Smith, a running back at Old Rochester, will compete in both football and track at Southern Connecticut.
