N.H. officials probe fatal Salem blaze in apartment
One man jumped out a thirdfloor window while firefighters pulled four people out of a burning building in Salem, N.H., late Saturday night — one of whom later died at a hospital in Methuen after escaping the flames.
Fire Battalion Chief John Brackett said a fire alarm was triggered at an 11-unit apartment building complex on Cluff Crossing Road in Salem about 11:05 p.m.
When firefighters arrived at the scene they saw heavy fire coming from the second floor and extending to the third floor, Brackett said.
The fire department received multiple reports that the fire made it to the hallway, Brackett said. Firefighters used ladders to get four of the five occupants out. The fifth jumped from a third-floor window and was transported to Parkland Medical Center in Derry, N.H., for non-life-threatening injuries.
Three other people were also taken to Parkland Medical Center and a man in his 30s was transported to Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, where he was pronounced dead, according to Brackett.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the New Hampshire state fire marshall’s office.
