Senior snipers power BC High victory

- By DAVID POLLARD Matt Feld, Kevin Barrucci and Marcello Rossetti contributed to this report.

Seniors Timmy Kelly and Michael Grant each scored twice to lead BC High to a 5-2 victory over Hingham yesterday in the first round of the fifth annual Buddy Ferreira Classic at Falmouth Ice Arena.

“Every year you come down here, it’s a good tournament,” said Eagles coach John Flaherty. “There’s always good games and there’s always good teams, so it’s a good prelude for any tournament to come.”

With the game tied 1-1, Grant cruised up the right side, blew past the Hingham defense and roofed it in tight over the glove of Robbie Kornack (24 saves) to give BC High a one-goal edge at 7:12 of the second period.

“He’s a goal-scorer,” Flaherty said. “When he gets tight he knows where to put it, and I think it gave us the jump we needed.”

The Eagles (12-4-1) dominated play after taking the lead, outshooting the Harbormen 18-5 after Grant’s highlight-reel goal.

“We sustained a lot of pressure on the power play to end the second and we tried to take that momentum going into the third,” said Flaherty. “I think we’ve been a good third period team all season long, so we tried to continue to do that.”

BC High shut the door in the third, with two goals coming 54 seconds apart. The first was scored by Joseph Kramer through a screen at 9:32 to make it 3-1. Kelly then netted his second on a wrist shot following a Hingham turnover in its own zone to push the lead to three.

Hingham (10-4-6) got a power-play goal from Will Kenney with 58 seconds remaining, before Grant iced it 37 seconds later with an empty-netter.

“I think we worked hard today and the hard work really paid off in the third period,” said Kelly. “I think we needed to stay grounded. I think we did a good job of keeping with our game and staying humble.”

Hingham trailed 1-0 after the first, but evened the score on John Sullivan’s wrist shot from the left hashmark at 1:52 of the second.

BC High struck 2:16 into the contest when a high wrist shot by Andrew McDonough was deflected in by Kelly, parked in the low slot.
