Flyers punch out Rangers

Pressed into action after Philadelph­ia Flyers starter Michal Neuvirth left with a lower-body injury, rookie goaltender Alex Lyon was confident at Madison Square Garden having played there before for Yale. In his fourth NHL game, Lyon calmly went out over the next 40 minutes and made 25 saves for his first win as the surging Flyers rolled past the slumping New York Rangers, 7-4, yesterday for their sixth win in seven games.

Travis Konecny scored the tiebreakin­g goal late in the second period, and Claude Giroux and Jori Lehtera scored in the third to finish off the win, with Henrik Lundqvist allowing all seven goals in the Rangers’ fourth straight loss. Giroux’s goal was his 20th of the season and the 200th of his career.

Devils 3, Hurricanes 2 — In Raleigh, N.C., Taylor Hall scored on a rebound with 22 seconds left in overtime, giving New Jersey the win against Carolina and extending his league-best scoring streak to 11 games.

Keith Kinkaid stopped 40 shots for the Devils. Nico Hischier and Pavel Zacha had the first two goals.

Teuvo Teravainen scored the first Hurricanes goal and Jeff Skinner tied the game in a sixth-attacker situation with 1:18 left in regulation.

The Devils’ Miles Wood was suspended for two games by the NHL for a blindside hit Saturday.

Penguins 5, Blue Jackets 2 — Riley Sheahan scored two goals in the first period, rookie Tristan Jarry had 35 saves in his first NHL game in a month and Pittsburgh picked up a fifth straight victory, against host Columbus, to move into first place in the Metropolit­an Division.

Jake Guentzel had a goal and two assists, and Brian Dumoulin and Zach Aston-Reese also scored for the Penguins.

Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2 — Auston Matthews scored with 30.2 seconds left to give Toronto the win in Detroit.

Matthews took William Nylander’s pass and snapped home his 27th goal of the season. James van Riemsdyk and Mitch Marner also scored for Toronto,.

Anthony Mantha and Henrik Zetterberg scored for Detroit. Jets 7, Panthers 2 — Kyle Connor scored twice, Blake Wheeler and Tyler Myers each had three assists and Winnipeg took over the Central Division lead by beating Florida.

Nikolaj Ehlers, Mark Scheifele, Bryan Little, Mathieu Perreault and Patrik Laine also scored and Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves to help the Jets win their third straight.

Oilers 4, Avalanche 2 — In Denver, Connor McDavid had his third hat trick of the season, and Edmonton doubled up Colorado to snap a six-game losing streak.

Ryan Strome also scored for the Oilers, who snapped the Avalanche’s 10-game home winning streak.

Sharks 5, Stars 2 — Mikkel Boedker scored twice in a fourgoal first period that propelled host San Jose to a fourth win in five games, against Dallas.

Joe Pavelski, Melker Karlsson and Justin Braun also scored for the winners and Martin Jones made 26 saves.
