No. 5 Fighting Irish overpower Eagles

It was clear almost from the start that Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw wasn’t thrilled with the way her No. 5 Fighting Irish were playing yesterday at Conte Forum. Fortunatel­y for McGraw and her team, there was still plenty to get the job done against Boston College.

“I didn’t think we came out ready,” McGraw said after the Irish shook off a sluggish start and cruised to their 10th straight victory, an 89-55 rout of BC. “I was really frustrated with our approach to the game today.”

Jessica Shepard and Jackie Young each had 18 points for Notre Dame (25-2, 13-1 ACC).

Taylor Ortlepp came off the bench to lead the Eagles (7-20, 2-12) with 24 points.

UConn 106, Temple 45 — Katie Lou Samuelson scored 27 points and the top-ranked Huskies (26-0, 13-0) continued to roll through the American Athletic Conference with this win over the visiting Owls (10-16, 2-11).

Elon 65, Northeaste­rn 46 — Stella Clark had 13 points for the Huskies (13-13, 8-7) but the Phoenix (19-7, 11-4 CAA) shot 60 percent on the way to this win at the Cabot Center.

Men’s basketball

Wichita State 76, Cincinnati 72 — Landry Shamut scored 19 points, and the No.19 Shockers (21-5, 11-3 AAC) ended the nation’s longest home-court winning streak, beating the No. 5 Bearcats (23-4, 12-2) in Highland Heights, Ky.

Michigan 74, Ohio State 62 — Jordan Poole scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half to help the No.22 Wolverines (22-7, 11-5 Big Ten) sink the No. 8 Buckeyes (22-7, 13-3) in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Duke 66, Clemson 57 — Gary Trent Jr. hit three foul shots with 1:31 left to lift the No. 12 Blue Devils (22-5, 10-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) over the No. 11 Tigers (20-6, 9-5) in Clemson, S.C. In New England games: Stony Brook 72, UNH 63 — UC Iroegbu had 17 points with three 3-pointers and the Seawolves (1117, 6-8 America East) defeated the visiting Wildcats (10-18, 6-8).

UMass-Lowell 74, Binghamton 69 — Jahad Thomas scored 22 points and the host River Hawks (10-16, 4-9 AE) beat the Bearcats (11-17, 2-11).

UConn 84, E. Carolina 80 — Jalen Adams had 26 points and the Huskies (13-14, 6-8 AAC) topped the host Pirates (10-15, 4-10).

Hartford 69, Vermont 68 — Jason Dunne made five 3-pointers and scored 26 points as the host Hawks (16-11, 9-4) stunned the Catamounts (22-6, 12-1 AE).

Women’s hockey

BU 2, UNH 0 — Senior Erin O’Neil stopped all 32 shots she faced to send the Terriers (13-156, 8-11-5) to a Women’s Hockey East win over the Wildcats (14-137, 9-10-5) at Walter Brown Arena.

Providence 1, NU 0 — Madison Myers made 35 saves and Cassidy MacPherson scored as the host Friars (16-11-7, 12-7-5 WHE) blanked the Huskies (1516-3, 11-11-2).
