BC women need new hoop coach

Boston College will have a change atop its under-performing women’s basketball program.

Head coach Erik Johnson resigned yesterday, a day after losing to North Carolina in the ACC tournament to close a season where the team went 7-23.

It was the seventh consecutive losing season for the BC women, with Johnson unable to turn things around in his six years leading the team.

“Erik has put his heart and soul into leading our women’s basketball program and we appreciate his years of service,” BC athletic director Martin Jarmond said. “We wish him and his family the best in all of their future endeavors.”

Before the season began, Johnson, who was an assistant under Cathy Inglese during the Eagles’ successful run in the early 2000s, was optimistic about the direction of his program. He spoke of how his program “finally turned that corner” in terms of the culture within his team.

“We’re going to surprise a lot of people,” Johnson told the Herald in November. “We are young, a lot of our most talented players are freshmen and sophomores, but I’ve got seniors that buy in, that are showing positive leadership, in ways our team hasn’t experienced in the past, and that’s been great. Our culture is 100 percent better than it was a year ago.”

But the Eagles fell flat again. Johnson went 68-115 in his time at BC, including 19-77 in ACC play.
