Burton advances Newton South

- By BRENDAN CONNELLY

Bishop Feehan had tournament history on its side. Newton South had Veronica Burton on its side. Advantage: Newton South. Burton turned in another superb effort, scoring 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, to power the top-seeded Lions to a 55-34 win in a Division 1 South quarterfinal.

“I’d say we were well prepared for it, so that makes it even better,” Burton said. “Just to see our hard work pay off. I’m proud of everyone on the team.”

Newton South led 28-16 at halftime, but the eighth-seeded Shamrocks trimmed into the advantage, forcing Lions coach Joe Rogers to call a timeout.

Burton then took over. The Northwestern-bound senior scored 15 points over the final 12 minutes.

Rogers doesn’t plan on his Lions (21-1) taking anything for granted.

“If we want to be in the place we want to be, you’re going to have to beat some really good programs,” Rogers said. “We have a lot of respect for the programs in Div. 1 South and how difficult this sectional is, and especially (Bishop Feehan) having been there.

“So it’s a big (win) for us.” Anna Shaughnessy led the Shamrocks (15-7) with 16 points.

In other Div. 1 South action, Maggie Danehy scored 20 points and Meg Hill had 10 points and 11 rebounds as No. 3 Mansfield (20-3) beat No. 6 Wellesley, 48-35 . . . . Adriana Timberlake posted 15 points to lead No. 2 Braintree (19-3) past No. 7 Walpole, 64-41.

Caroline Andersen scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as No. 8 Wilmington (15-7) knocked off top-seeded Lynn Classical, 64-58, in a Div. 2 North quarterfinal, with Bella Granara adding 15 points and Morgan Bresnahan contributing 10 rebounds to the win.

In the Div. 3 North quarterfinals, Sammi Gallant had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists as No. 8 Bishop Fenwick (13-9) upset No. 1 St. Mary’s, 55-52.

Menel Lamadzema went for 29 points, and Talia Mamayek had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, as No. 3 Mystic Valley (18-3) routed No. 11 Green Academy, 64-27, in a Div. 4 North quarterfinal.

Jayda Fortin finished with 12 points as No. 7 Greater New Bedford Voke (16-8) upended No. 2 Apponequet, 3325 in a Div. 3 South quarterfinal.
