GRAMS FULL OF MIXED MESSAGES

-

Massachusetts-raised stars Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak turned heads when they attended Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party together Sunday night. But despite fans’ hopes for a reconciliation, the comedic exes are standing by their supposed friend-zone status.

“I’m headed out for a night of fun with my best friend,” Kaling said in an Instagram video, before panning to Novak, who was beside her in the back seat of a limo.

The Cambridge-born actress later posted a cozy selfie with her date/ex at dinner. However there was no sappy, heartfelt caption accompanying the photo. In fact, she wrote nothing at all, which only piqued suspicion — and outright giddiness — among her hopelessly romantic followers.

Kaling, who’s recently been promoting her upcoming movie “A Wrinkle in Time” and NBC series “Champions,” wasn’t alone in plastering couple-esque pictures across social media. Novak also took to Instagram to show he was hanging out with Kaling, sharing an image of them acting all cutesy in the VF bash’s photo booth.

“Super present with @mindykaling @vanityfair,” the Newton native wrote in the caption, which also included a heart emoji. Because why not send a mixed signal or two?

Novak and Kaling have been rallying supporters of their relationship since they played on-again-off-again lovers Ryan Howard and Kelly Kapoor on “The Office.” They dated IRL when they were in their 20s, until Novak broke it off and left Kaling “so miserable” as she told Howard Stern in 2014.

Since their split, the 38-yearolds have settled for being besties. And while this recent red carpet date might have some fans rooting for the return of their romance, they have a history of hitting the town together while still supposedly staying platonic. Over the past year alone, Kaling, now a new mom, and Novak have been spotted out at dinner on several occasions.

As far as we can tell, the willthey-won’t-they saga has only opened a new chapter. WUPHF.
