Allston apartments in works

Rooftop farm, bike shop included in plan

- By DONNA GOODISON

Boston Real Estate Collaborative’s planned 54-unit residential development in Allston would feature a stepped-back building design with a landscaped central courtyard and green roofs that include a rooftop farm, according to more detailed project plans filed with the city.

A mix of studio to three-bedroom units would include 16 condos and 38 apartments, including seven affordable units, on the nearly half-acre site at 44 North Beacon St.

Boston’s Francke | French Architects designed the proposed U-shaped, three- to seven-story building.

The project’s courtyard would face North Beacon Street and feature local art installations, according to an expanded project notification form submitted to the Boston Planning & Development Agency. The rooftop farm would support a “hyperlocal” community-supported agriculture program. CSAs typically allow community members to buy “shares” of fresh produce from farmers.

The North Beacon Street site is about a quarter-mile from the MBTA’s Boston Landing commuter rail station. The developer purchased the nearly half-acre property, which currently includes a single-story ambulance service facility, for $3.5 million last August.

The development would have 35 underground parking spaces, covered storage for 60 bicycles and a public bicycle repair station.

Boston Real Estate Collaborative has set a targeted completion date of Jan. 1, 2021.
