Joseph C. Bartley, at 87, of Andover, Harvard Sq. Burger Cottage owner

Joseph C. “Mr. B” Bartley of Andover died Monday. He was 87.

He was born in North Andover and raised in North Andover and South Lawrence.

Mr. Bartley attended Central Catholic High School and Lawrence High School (Oliver School) before going to work at age 16 to help his family.

He was the founder of the restaurant Mr. Bartley’s Burger Cottage in Harvard Square in 1960, which was depicted in movies, books and television shows.

Mr. Bartley built friendship­s with everyone, from sports heroes, politician­s, Harvard University scholars and the common man.

He was a devout Catholic, attended daily Mass and was generous to charitable organizati­ons, including Catholic Charities and Point After Club of Lawrence.

He loved watching basketball and boxing, was a longtime Red Sox season ticket holder, enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at his beach cottage in Seabrook, N.H., and treasured walks through the streets of Cambridge and Boston to connect with friends and loyal customers.

He is survived by his wife Joan M.; a daughter, Kathryn Richard of North Andover; four sons, Joseph Jr. of Lawrence, William of Reading, Robert of Bedford, N.H., and Christophe­r of Holden; a sister, Joan Benjamin; 14 grandchild­ren and nine great-grandchild­ren and two nieces.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Theresa’s Church, North Reading.

Burial will be in St. Mary-Immaculate Conception Cemeteries, Lawrence.
