‘Extremely reduced’ schedule for T

- By DAN ATKINSON

The T will be running during today’s blizzard — but with slower service in the subway and “extremely reduced” trips on the commuter rail, officials said, as they urged Bay Staters to take public transportation instead of driving during a whiteout.

Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollock said the T will operate on a weekend schedule, with fewer trains making trips, and that the commuter rail will operate on its “Extremely Reduced Schedule” on all lines.

“There will be enough trains on each of the lines for people to get in for work and back home if they need to, but many of the trains you are used to taking will not be running tomorrow,” Pollock said yesterday, adding riders should check individual line schedules online for the new trip times.

“The goal is to provide service for those folks who need public transportation to get where they’re going while at the same time reduce service, because we’re expecting much lighterthan-usual travel and it helps to preserve the condition of the equipment,” Pollock said.

The Mattapan trolley will be replaced by shuttle buses and MBTA ferries are canceled entirely. The Ride will still run but may see delays.

Both Gov. Charlie Baker and Mayor Martin J. Walsh are calling on commuters to use public transportation instead of driving to work, warning of heavy snowfall and white-out conditions on the highways.
