Pats let go McClellin

The Patriots released veteran linebacker Shea McClellin with a failed physical designation.

McClellin, who was signed in 2016, did not play last season, as he was on injured reserve from the outset. He suffered two concussions during the year, and it’s not clear if concussions were part of the failed physical. McClellin, who appeared in 14 regular-season games in 2016, does have hopes of playing this year.

By cutting him, the Patriots save $2.35 million against the cap. A possible alternative might be Jonathan Casillas, who was in Foxboro for a visit Thursday. It would be a reunion of sorts. The linebacker helped the team win a Super Bowl in 2014, then left in free agency to the Giants. He’s 30 now, and once again out on the market.

Casillas played in just eight games last season due to a neck injury. With the Giants, he had 216 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one interception, 13 pass defenses and one forced fumble in 39 games.

Mathieu signs with Texans

The “Honey Badger” is headed to Houston. The Texans signed unrestricted free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu. Mathieu was released last week by Arizona after five seasons when the two sides couldn’t rework his contract. He has 11 career interceptions in an injuryplagued career . . . .

Veteran center Mike Pouncey agreed to a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers. Pouncey, a three-time Pro Bowler, was released by Miami last week after he refused a pay cut . . . .

Bills stock up offensive line

The Buffalo Bills began restocking their offensive line in free agency by reaching agreements to sign center Russell Bodine and tackle Marshall Newhouse . . . .

The Los Angeles Rams re-signed former Patriots defensive end Dominique Easley after a right knee injury kept him out last season. His first two NFL seasons with the Patriots ended early due to injury . . . .

The Washington Redskins signed cornerback Orlando Scandrick to a two-year deal worth up to $10 million, according to a source. Dallas released Scandrick over the weekend . . . .

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed former Philadelphia defensive end Vinny Curry in free agency and center Ryan Jensen.
